my friends bike had a mishap at Gisburn yesterday when his non drive crank arm came off the bike...the bolt fell off at some point so we had no way of re-attaching it
the cranks are truvativ and the b/b is an ISIS unit but the axle on the b/b looks shot as the splines are pretty worn
he's asked me if i can replace the parts if he gets them, which i dont have a problem with but i've never used ISIS so i'm not sure if my shimano b/b tool will work or do i need a specific ISIS b/b tool to take the existing unit out?

I removed an isis BB for the first time last weekend. Shimano tool will work fine, I just had to take a little washer off the axle first before the tool would clear it and locate correctly.

My advice would be to take this opportunity to bin the Isis (which is *** and don't last) and replace with something else.

Depends on the cartridge; I've used some that take a normal BB tool (same as square taper) and the SKF BB which needed something different to grab the external notches. You can usually improvise with a normal crank extractor to get the other crank arm off, though - usually a bolt dropped into the hole works.

If it's a Truvativ crank there's a fair chance it'll be a Truvativ ISIS BB. If so you'll need an external spline BB tool (Park Tool BBT-18) to remove it.

These came in two variants; DH/FR which had thicker axle walls and used a 12 mm bolt and XC/Road which used a 15mm bolt. The XC version has very thin walls so it's easy to mess up without the Isis specific crank puller (Park Tool CCP-44)

If it's the DH/FR version there's much more to push against so you may be able to use something to block off the axle and use a standard crank puller.

If it's an FSA/Raceface unit then it'll have Shimano style internal splines. all modern BB tools will fit but when Isis first came out some tools didn't have the internal diameter to go over the oversized axle so if you can't get your BB tool to engage you'll need a newer one such as Park's BBT-22 or BBT-32.

Hope that helps

I'd be guessing the crank arm is probably knackered too.

yes they are knackered so they will need to be changed...
once i've got the ISIS b/b off i'll be sticking a shimano setup on
