I have a 2013 Boardman hybrid fitted with a FSA Velo Compact 50/34 that has started to creak a lot from the left hand arm?
It is progressivly getting worse.
What is there for around the £50 to replace the whole chainset with? I would prefer a HT2 chainset for extra stiffness as this FSA one is quite flexy.
Cheers
Steve
Have you tried greasing then replacing the BB, or even tightening the crank arm first?
£50 will be hard to achieve, but you can get a SRAM Apex for around £70 from Merlin.
I have took the crank arm bolt out but cannot remove the arm as it needs a crank extractor and I odnt have one!
I have only had the bike since january and its done a max of about 300 miles.
I've got the same cranks on mine, they've been good tbh. Square taper needs a good interface. Used 105 could be a good option (though they are ugly). But you'll need a crank extractor to swap it 😉
check chainring bolts are tight...
Did you get it from Halfords.?
Same crankset on my bike and i've done 1000's of miles on it.
A crank extractor will be far cheaper than fitting a new comparable set.
As above, creaking almost NEVER means anything is worn out, just moving around in it's threads.
So...tighten and then re-grease threads on pedals, crank bolts, chainring bolts and then BB itself.
Thanks for the replies. The bike was bought from Halfords. It creaks with 3 different sets of pedals and it's only the left hand arm. It does it more if I stand up and pedal hard.
I have took the crank bolt out and sprayed some gt85 around but it made no difference. All chairings and bolts are tight.
what to replace with?
baby robin?
Take it back to them, explain the problem and ask them so strip it out re-grease and put it all back together.
"I have took the crank bolt out and sprayed some gt85 around but it made no difference. All chairings and bolts are tight."
Might as well urinated on a baby unicorn while standing on 1 foot for all the good that did.
Buy crank extractor
Remove crank
Bye bb tool
Remove bb grease up , replace and rebuild.
I should add get it torqued up to the correct settings.
Take it back to the store and see what they will do. I know I would look at it for you. They should be good enough to take it apart as suggested above. The only thing I would say is depending on the store you might be without for a couple of days!
