Just got back out on the road bike after spending the winter on the turbo and am finding that about an hour off the bike after a three hour ride I begin to suffer form trapped wind/bloatedness. Anyone else experience this or know why it might happen? I do suffer from IBS occasionally so not sure if it is connected.

Cheers

I get it sometimes - put it down to an allergy to road riding.

did you drink enough ?

i often feel bloated after a ride and was told that i wasnt drinking enough so my body was sending a lot of fluid towards my stomach area as a protective measure .
i try to drink more and bloating has gone .

I do try and drink but am I right in thinking that too much water can also cause bloating. I'll try drinking more and see of that helps

Also I end to ride early in the morning so perhaps I am not hydrated enough

Are you using energy drinks.
Some powder mixes can have that effect?

Energy drinks based on maltodextrin will cause flatulance an hour or two after the ride as your gut tries to digest the carbohydrate. Other carbs like beans will cause the same effect. This gets worse as you age. I can't eat beans now, they cause me too much pain and awful farting.

Milky drinks can be harder to digest as you get into your forties and fifites because you are making less of the enzyme lactase, which usually enables you to process lactose (milk).

Gulping your drink with half a mouthful of air will cause the same problem - be sure to suck the water from the nozzle and swallow without air.

Thanks for replies. Just drinking water and eating a banana. Going to start using torq energy though as I am going to push time and distance up

Went back to working at my normal base office on Friday after a couple of months on a clients site, 15 mile morning commute on an empty stomach drinking water, feeling a bit farty followed by porridge and a pot of proper coffee... All of a sudden at about 8:30 it's time to empty myself out. Felt grand after that...

I reckon cycling for more than 30 minutes just joggles your guts and loosens things, chuck in some coffee (essentially a mild laxative) and everything just wants out... Dunno how it works with IBS though.

But my advice is basically, drink coffee then have a dump.

I have an espresso before I head out and a bowl of cereal then a filter coffee and usually an eggs based breakfast when I get back

I have a theory that you swallow air when you are riding and it has to come out somewhere.

MrsMC isn't convinced by my theory

Update - went out again this morning but skipped the pre-ride espresso and drank more than I have done and so far no bloating or wind. Here's hoping that that is the end of it...

Hi,

It has been six months now and I am still suffering with this (although not as often) - I seem to get it with water, with TORQ energy drink. The one constant is a banana but I eat these on a daily basis without the trapped wind - anyone know of any reason not to eat a banana when exercising?

Cheers

drop the Torq crap

Make your own, experiment, find the right one for you

I eat banana after exercise, Im a home made power bar person during exercise, coffee cake panini etc Never fancy fruit

Try changing what you eat/drink sounds simplest solution.

One time I had similar wind was when I had old power/energy drink that had gone off in camlbak. Is your bottles spotless?

Put some bib shorts on.

I know there was a smiley on there too, but get some if you don't already use them

There are lots of good reasons to eat bananas but they contain both soluble and insoluble fibre. Soluble fibre absorbs water, slows digestion and makes you feel full, insoluble fibre makes your poo bulkier
The fibre content can lower cholesterol levels and is good for constipation
Maybe it's worth experimenting with when you eat a banana?

Might be postural ie wind that you would normally get rid of consciously / subconsciously gets trapped by tight Lycra and/or hunching over.

Maybe try 5 mins off the bike every hour and have a stretch.

The other possibility that no one has considered is aerophagia
It is possible you are swallowing air as part of your efforts which then makes you feel bloated, and could be nothing to do with your liquid or solids consumption

Probably by people who make or sell energy drinks.

I was getting bloating after a ride a few years back..

Turns out it was ulcerative colitis (similar to IBS) which was becoming agitated by dehydration

Water and some food you normally eat? I like jam sandwiches and snickers.

Avoid gluten before a ride. It's difficult for your gut to digest especially when your body is diverting energy to other areas eg your leg so it ends up fermenting in your gut causing wind which gets trapped due to being bent over the bike.

I'll try just water next time. I think it may IBS related. Usually have a bowl of cereal about 10-15 minutes before I head out - time to stop this?
