I've fitted one of these to my Inbred, which luckily has ISCG mounts. Question is I can only get enough tension on the chain if the roller sits above the chain. But I've seen pics of Inbreds with it below the chain, pushing it up, which looks neater and is more out of the way. Will I have to run a half link chain to do this?

Not sure on that specific frame but that's just how I ran mine on my old DMR Sidekick. Pushing the chain upwards to gain tension. I would think a half link would get you closer.

Just a thought, I've only got a 30t chainring on it (with a 17t sprocket). So maybe going 34 x 22 will give more room to push the chain up?

There are online calculators for chain length based on chainstay length and ring/sprocket size

For example

I would have a play with that looking for a ratio that gets you less excess chain over a whole number of links. But also ends you up as similar as you can get to the gearing you want. See a gear inches calculator for that, or just 30/17=1.76.

Stinger as you describe is a decent chain tension solution.
