I guess you've got the indicator windows on your shifters ? Ideally you need shifters without indicators, think about upgrading to XT or XTR, the whole lot'll fit together snugly then.

And I think to use the matchmakers you need shifters that have a removable clamp (like XT).
It looks like the 2012 deore stuff has this but older ones definitely didn't.

Yes the shifters have the indicator windows they are from my 2009 rock hopper pro which i used as a doner bike and they are now on a Santacruz nickel, i have only put a rear brake on so far so its not a mega big deal as its the front mech shifter but when i do the front brake its going to be a real pain. I will change the shifters first before I upgrade the front brake. Just chipping away slowly at the upgrades and replacing things as they break or wear out . Thanks for the help guys.

Are you running the shifters between the grips and the brakes? If not, you should be.

Pics on the Hope website shows various combo's. I do prefer Matchmakers, though. Tidy everything up, and it all falls to hand better. If you have Matchmakers, you will run brakes inside shifters, so you might as well get used to it.
