tech != cool

Tony, most of the UK mobile companies will provide a one off use 3G dongle that will work abroad. As an example, T-mobile will sell you a dongle for £40 and then you need to get a european booster for say ten quid (assuming you don't want to go over a 50Mb bandwidth limit). That's just an example.

Does that help?

edit: Note that that is probably not the best deal, I bet with a bit of searching you could do a lot better than that.

Aah right, nip into a high street shop tomorrow then. They'll lynch you silly but may be able to give you something straight away.

Do you have a 3G enabled mobile phone? You could tether your laptop to it. Most android phones do this easily, you'd just need to get your mobile phone provider to make it work abroad, might cost you though.....

Yeah, but you need to make sure your blackberry will work with 3G abroad, and you also need to check you can use your blackberry as a modem in the Uk before you leave. It's not simple with blackberries I'm afraid. You need the Blackberry manager installed on your laptop.

Umm hang on...

That's assuming you have a compatible blackberry.

How far are you away from town? When we were in Verbier earlier this year we were in pretty much the highest part of town which is a long way from the centre and we could still pick up ahem...free wireless access points in town.

A few years ago our guide (nasty) Nick from MBMB used to get free internet from the library, a public service apparently.

You should be able to teather through your blackberry.

My laptop uses my iPhone personal hotspot to connect so it should be possible quite easily

o2 do a cap at 40 quid

on 3 this means you get charged normal extortionate roaming rate, and at 40 quid, they cut you off, and send you a text message saying "you have used 40 quid, would you like us to unlock the next 40 quid"

the rate doesnt change, it is to prevent accidental use of roaming, and the associated thousand pound bills.

thats on 3 at least. Check it.
