My better half is interested in a bike trailer to transport our 3 year old and our Springer..ย  (Bike to more exciting places to walk rather than drive).

Can anyone suggest something suitable? Dog and child currently about 15kg each.

Is this a really bad idea?

We've got a hamax outback which has max load of 40kg, or 22kg per child, max height 117cm .This is one of this bigger trailers but your 3 year old may outgrow it quite quickly. We had a 4 year old in with his bike in the trailers boot, but that was close to max height for trailer . The cheaper trailers in halfords are even smaller .ย  some kind of cargo bike may be better? Not cheap or easy to get in a car for trips further afield.

I could get my three and a five year old girls into my Burley D'lite. Bit of a squeeze though.

Dunno if it'll be a bad idea for you but it was for me. My dog didn't take to it at all, not sure I could see a Springer taking to it either to be honest, depending on the temperament of course. Mine hated it so much she actually managed to get out of the trailer despite being clipped in. Luckily I was going very slowly and turned round in time so no harm done. Having said that, if she had have taken to it, I think it would have been fun. She's only 10kg so the weight wasn't an issue, I think your wife would be fine with the two of them on the back so long as the route was fairly flat.

Can't really recommend anything but maybe get a double child buggy and fold one of the seats down for the dog. Or take it out and put a cushion in there.

The idea still appeals but if I tried again I'd get a cargo bike type and see how she gets on with that. That way at least I could see her. You could try one of those instead but not the nicest of bikes to ride and pretty expensive to try too.

Hope it works out for you as, like I say, it's a nice idea if it works.

Thanks all. Dog is very chilled (for a springer) but I think would need space to lie down which would rule out anything compact. Love the look of those cargo bikes but a bit overkill for occasional use (and don't fancy one up hills).

Will investigate your suggestions.
