[Closed] Bike rack for BMW Mini Cooper S?

I'm looking for a bike rack for the back of the OH's Mini Cooper S - preferably something that'll survive me flinging the car around corners 😉

My ancient Halfords rack won't fit because of the fat boot spoiler/wing on the S model.

Just wondered if anyone on STW has a MCS that they use a bike rack on? If so, what sort of bike rack do you use?

p.s. Guys at MINI dealership tried to flog the OH a roof mounted bike carrier, but it involved cutting part of the rain gutter out...and it was more than we wanted to spend - so, not so keen on that one.

I've just bought a Saris Bones for mine - rack fits car fine. Haven't quite figured out the best way to fit a Turner Flux onto it though...

I'll sell you a genuine mini rack or Thule rack for up top. Got. Both in shed gathering dust....

Used a Thule Roofrack from mine, ran for 2 years faultless and you don't have to drill into the roof like you do with the official BMW one.

Cheers for the advice folks. I think Evans have an offer on Saris Bones ATM, so think I'll go for one of them.

Is yours a pre-2006 MINI? (think the 'official' term is an R53). We used to have a 2005 model and were told the BMW rack involved roof drilling 😯 The car we have now is a 2008 (R56 version), so apparently the roof doesn't need drilling to accept the BMW roof bars - 'just' cutting sections out of the roof gutters, which are filled with snap-in sections when the bars are not on (sounds like a bit of an afterthought codge to me - but I stand to be corrected).

I bought my Saris Bones 2 from Rutland Cycles (£96 delivered). Biketart are currently selling them for £95 delivered ( http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Saris-Racks-Bones-2-Bike-Car-Rack-Grey-/330749010780?pt=UK_Sports_Leisure_Cycling_Bags_Panniers_SR&hash=item4d022d635c)

My S is a 2003 (so an R53 rather than an R56). I can't see that making much difference to how it fits but you might want to check...

Thule roof rack is the best option. Was always a pain taking the boot lid rack on and off, so much easier with the roof.

Used a Bones RS on mine with hatch huggers as the spoiler stops the hooks grabbing hold otherwise. Has marked the paintwork slightly buy it'll polish out and I gave up being precious about cars a few years ago.

Can squeeze 2 bikes in the back with the seats down and wheels off so
I usually do this now.

hmm...maybe interested in one of these.

Sounds like you've used 'em on an R56(?) If so, how do they fit - is it true what the delaer was saying about having to cut some sections of the roof gutter out?
