A county in Washington State is considering introducing a licence fee for bikes. The money quote:

"We license our dogs. You license your car. Why wouldn't you license your bikes?"

Well - we stopped licensing our dogs - if the license is free no problem - I think it would put off people cycling to work for a start - like the argument of wearing helmets - i.e. compulsary. Be nice though if insurance was included and anti-theft protection i.e. chip and serial tracing? An idea?

I can imagine that Gordon would love that idea, he is so strapped for cash right now.

Think of how the Gov would introduce it, license per person ?, nah, make it per bike !!! and watch that money role in.

Where would we mount our number plates ?.

Who knows, perhaps for 2010, a breathing tax, oh, err, I mean license....

I would argue that enough money is already generated for the inland revenue from taxes on bikes, their spare parts, the taxes from the people and companies who work in the trade, etc, etc.

In fact, does anyone know what the treasury makes out of our passion for the cycle ?.

No, licensing wouldn't get my vote. But then again, since when did that have anything to do with....anything.

License fee for cycling ?, Oh please, no !.

Thery just seem a bit clueless don't they? Before introducing a scheme like that I'd like to know what the pros and cons were, as in, how much money it would bring in compared to how much it would cost to administer and enforce. They don't even seem to have done that.

Solo, sorry to interrupt your persecution fantasies but the current government has no plans to licence cycling.

Mr A.

No flies on you, well spotted there. The original post related to the U.S.A.

However, our politicians aren't shy of looking to other countries for ideas regarding many areas of governance.

Read the entire article and you'll discover that our friends in the U.S.A. may consider a voluntary system. So don't worry, if it worked and if our MPs, sorry, MEPs, liked what they found, then you'd be able to buy your license on a voluntary basis.

Thanks ๐Ÿ™„

May I take it that you'd be happy with a bike-tax, err, license ?, here in the U.K. ?.

I don't even know where to start there, sorry. I suggest that you get back to dressing your dog up as Peter Mandelson and shouting at it.

Mr A.

Thats very good, I lol at that one. Would that be Mandy by day, or Mandy by night....

No need to apologise.

I was merely enquiring as to whether you'd find the cost of having to pay for a cycle license, agreeable...
