[Closed] Bike forum slow without adblocker?

Noticed that my laptop slowed down like crazy (monitored it in the task manager as well, over 90% CPU...) when using this singletrack bike forum without adblocker.

With adblocker "on" everything is fine. CPU 6% then. Perfect.

Only a problem with my old, low performance laptop?

Silly: other web sites demand the adblocker "off". Means a bit of a hassle...

Our policy on Ad Blocking
Singletrackworld is an ad supported website. As a non-premier, registered user you are accepting that the displaying of ads in your browser is the cost of being a registered user and you agree that you will not block these ads. If you block the ads we reserve the right to suspend your account and/or block our content from displaying in your browser. In addition you agree not to promote the use of ad blocking on our site in either story comments or forum posts.

The ads in a very real sense do allow you to use this site without having to hand over cash for the content. If the ads were not there earning us money for the time we spend keeping this site running and filling it with content then we simply would not bother with a website at all or we would severely strip it back to just being a promotion site for the mag. It simply would not be economically viable without the ads there.

There could be a script associated with an ad that's misbehaving. On the iPad (no adblocker) I'll get a fairly regular dialog popup stating "The operation could not be completed" which is basically saying the same thing.

Depending on your browser you can show the Developer Tools which might give an indication of what the problem is.

Edit: You say it's only on your old machine. It could be that there's something running that expects an up to date library with optimisation and the version of the library that is on that machine is very slow to run the code associated with the advert or adverts.

Dear Mike,

o.k.. Undertand.
🙄

But possible to somehow limit the power consumption?
Nearly can't use the Laptop and this forum when the adblocker is on.
Have the adblocker normally on - but had serious problems with this forum page.

Would be nice if you could check as well.
Happy new year and thanks for the service!

Just whitelist STW on your ad blocker or pay for a P is the simple answer

I first got an adblocker to make websites run properly, some news sites like Guardian had become unusable with adds slowing page loads and causing the pages to re-render (changing size)

As for STW if I get logged out of my P account I do notice how much slower it runs

IMO issue is overly complicated ads (eg animated) with high processor requirements. If it where just a photo it would be ok

@whitestone:
@jambalaya:

script associated with an ad that's misbehaving.

adds slowing page

Thanks. Might be indeed a script thing which turns nuts.
But no matter what - there is a policy at Singletrackworld that we have to keep the adblocker off.
See above. 😥
Still doing research what exactly is driving my Laptop nuts.
Guess one of the ad-videos...

It is incredibly unusable without the ability to stop ads. I don’t understand what the reluctance of people is to paying 1.49/month for something they use regularly. There is no way I could handle this site otherwise.

Yeah, I mean, £1.49/month is a nice bite sized amount.
Easy to Chew, so not so much power (Kw, if you will) needed.

Assuming you read all the t&Cs on everything you sign up for, I bet most folk aren't aware of that. Saying that, I'm also unsure how The Man is able to check that.

About time they started using the non-premium user’s browsers to mine bitcoin, I reckon
