We had a bike doctor come in to work this morning and tinker with everyones bike, paid for by the firm in order to promote the useage of bikeage no doubt.

Apparently they were ok with basic maintenance. I wasn't sure what that would stretch to so i asked them to true my wheels, replace the gear cables, line up and index them and lubey the lubeyable bits.

Would you deem this basic or pushing it?

I'd guess it's about safety and brakes-gear adjustment, but it's really about what you can get away with.

What's anticipated on a Dr bike visit is pretty much an adjust here and there, possibly replacing the odd cable and maybe new blocks. It largely depends upon what the company have paid for. If it's been a fixed price or a time plus components basis.

Personally I'd work on a time plus parts, meaning I'm not restricted by having to think about what I've allowed for and can fix pretty much anything I'm presented with (within reason).

Some will offer a drivetrain clean and relube as a service, gear cable change I think should be allowed for and a basic true to get the worst out could be expected too.

Brakes, gears, steering fair enough. Wheel truing getting a bit more than just basic though IMHO

When I'm Dr Bike, I do 1/2 hr per customer, to include maybe a cable inner or 2, or a set of blocks/pads, or a tube.

I'll do the most safety critical job(s) 1st, and let the customer know what still needs doing after the 1/2 hr is up.

Not fair to do more, as there are only so many customers I can see. Also no more parts, as the funder isn't paying for a complete re-build for a bike that isn't looked after.
