Need to return some tyres and seems post-free option from the UK is no longer available. Is this correct?

If it's their mistake, just pay postage then get reimbursed when you send proof of postage.
I had to send something back, it cost about £12 at the post office. If it's not faulty or you ordered wrong thing then you don't get the cost of postage back.

I’ve only returned bits that were broken and they’ve always given me a postage label after an email.
