This seems quite solid but surprisingly cheap - any experience?

will an mtb even fit in there?

and what's wrong with a cardboard bike box from the lbs for free?

I used to have something like that ^ was heavy and cumbersome.
When Easyjet destroyed it I went for a bag and line it with a cut to size box from my LBS.
Much nicer, cheaper, plenty stiff and way easier to cart around.

Anyone else notice the box itself weighs 13.5kg, doesn't leave a lot of room weight wise for a lot else bike or kit wise

I just do what Rob does and use a CRC bike bag lined with a cut down bike box. I found the bag alone didn't hold it's shape so bit's ended up floating around inside. Not light though, that, the pitch, a few tools and spare tyres came dangerously close to the 32kg limit.

The best solution I've seen was 2 bike boxes one fractionally bigger than the other put inside each other, then the whole lot mummified in 2 rolls of ductape to protect it from the rain (I've been delayed at the airport before and the luggage has just sat in piles on the tarmac in the rain for 2 hours so don't underestimate how useful this is!).

That case is probably good, I'd have thought it's similar size to most bags, which seem to take an XC bike, or anything bigger requires the forks to come off. My CRC one takes the pitch with the forks on, but not when lined with the box. By the loks of it there's still room to take the mech off, and put the frame diagonally in the box rather than across the bottom. And the weight might be 13kg, but you don't need to worry baout adding any extra packing to to the bike so you've got ~41lb of spare capacity, enough for a mid-weight DH bike.
