I put an XT M8000 rear mech on a new bike build the other day, with new shifter and cable, and didn't need to index it, it was spot-on straight away 🙂
I did have to adjust the B and limit screws a little though.
Should I have bought a lottery ticket ?

If you get the cable tension right, I. E. No slack but not pulling either, then you won't need to adjust the barrels.
