So my trusty Specialized shoes gave up the ghost in Glen Geldie 20 miles from the car on Saturday.

Replacement Shimano XC100s in size 49 arrived today. Too narrow. I,ve ordered a pair of Shimano X300s in 49 wide.

Anything else around the £100 mark for big wide feet worth considering?

I looked at Lakes previously as I'm a Sasquatch too, but the price is beyond my means 😢

Another +1 for Lake.

I'd be in a 9 (43 in Euro) in Clarks school shoes with a G width fitting (wish Clarks did carbon soled SPD shoes !!). But have to go up and up on most bike shoes - 46 in some Specialized, and even 47 to get enough width and volume in some Shimano winter goretex boots. Like coco the clown, but at least my feet aren't crushed.

I finally dropped the ££ (a lot of dosh I've got to say) on the wide fit Lakes (the 'competition' last is their widest of the wide fit, but the other wide fit are still wide too) and guess what - 44.5 on the road bike shoes (3 bolt cleat) and 45 on the mountain bike 2 bolt ones. And the most (maybe only) properly comfy and fitting bike shoes I've had in 20 years of using SPDs.

Moore Large were the UK importer for Lake - worth trying to watch the online auctions (John Pye auctions I think) for them as some may come up and be a bargain.

Lake mx169

Some lakes cut in at the toes, the lake 169 and 201 have a much more accommodating toe box than any other cycling shoes

Thanks for replies. Helpfully Lake give actual measurements in mm for their sizes. Looks like a 48 wide will fit. Pity other brands can't be as helpful.

I'll see how the Shimano 48 wide goes and try a Lake if it doesn't work.

Incidentally, none of my previous shoes have had the BOA fastener. Is is trouble free?

Some useful information regarding Shimano fit for wide feet here, I was surprised that in some cases they recommend 3 sizes up:

@Hedgehopper

It seems to be a black art. According to this Shimano chart I am a Shimano 47 as my biggest foot is 298mm long.

https://www.pushys.com.au/sizechart/view/block/id/shimano-sizing-chart/

But the size 49s I bought this week have a minimal gap in front of the toe. The chart says a size 49 is for a foot 312mm long. The entire size 49 Shimano XC1 shoe is 312mm long not counting the rubber strip at the front. So either that chart is wrong or Shimano ignore their own specs.

One of my current pairs is a Shimano MO87 wide size 49 which has been perfectly comfortable for thousands of miles.

The Lake size guide says measure foot and add 5mm. Which makes me a 48. Maybe that Shimano link has missed the add toe room step?

https://www.sigmasports.com/item/Lake/MX177-Wide-Fit-MTB-Shoes/UKEF

I guess all you can do is keep trying different pairs. At least I am not having to select from the entire market. Choice won't be hard. If it fits, I'll have it.

I've had BOAs on lakes for at least ten years. The early ones kinked or lost their plastic sheath but the later ones (5 years+) have been trouble free...

Crank brothers mallet?

Shimano sizing is all over the place and he charts don’t really help. I used to fit a ME7 well but the latest ones are way too narrow, even though they’re supposed to be a ride last.

You can’t just go up a few sizes as you end up with masses of space in fro g of your toes and can’t walk in them (and the clear likely ends up in the wrong place too.

See here for lake sizing. Lake Shoe Sizing | Cycling Shoes | Bike Shop UK Online (saltdogcycling.com)

Note that some wides are wider than others....

Also on the same website are instructions on how to measure your feet correctly...

If you use the tool it will come up with the closest match for you...

Lake Shoe Fit Tool - Salt Dog Cycling

Ive just ordered a pair of MX238s which although 5mm wider than the recommendation I am hoping aren't too wide - otherwise I will have to get the MX219s which are the correct size for me but they aren't leather...☹️The  MX322s are the only other option but they are vvvvvv expensive and I'm not spending that amount!

Well. A bit of success. After ordering and returning several pairs I got a pair of Northwave Origin 2s size 49. A perfect fit. Feels as wide as a Shimano wide fit 49. Good price too. I'm keeping them.

https://www.merlincycles.com/northwave-origin-2-mtb-shoes-2022-201505.html

I still have Shimano XC3 49 wide fits ordered. Assuming they fit I'll keep them as well. One pair out - two pairs in!.

@robertajobb were your Lakes the competition last? That’s the one that might work for me, but I always opt for an H/4E fitting (eg New Balance 1080) so I wondered how that last worked for your G fitting. At least I can try the Lake MX219 wide for £200 and get my money back if they’re no good.

Past Lake’s Competition last there’s only Bont’s Double Wide fit (£400 and non-returnable because they’re made to order!)
