Who cycles with their kids to school in the mornings?
I do, and I have had some pretty remarkable things happen on a regular basis.
Today's was a classic that I feel compelled to share as a lovely Thursday morning story ๐
Picture if you will, a relatively quiet suburban setting, with quiet roads and pavements full of kids and parents walking to school.
There's a family of cyclists taking their kid to school and a motorist decides to shout out "Excuse me"...they get ignored so they try again....."Excuse me"....again they are ignored as surely they could not possibly be suggesting that 3 cyclists should turn around whilst they are cycling along a road with parked cars to engage in a conversation. They try again for a third time "EXCUSE ME!".
This time, the father turns to see what on earth is going on.
Fortunately, the young cyclists remains focused upon avoiding parked cars and continuing to ride safely on the road.
Then the lady driver comes out with "He's too young to be riding on the road. He should be on the pavement!" All this was accomplished with quite some aplomb.
The motorist had wound their window down and leant over to shout this out whilst still driving along, taking a right turn into a blind side road, and with a windcreen full of ice!
Perhaps the ice had obscured her vision of all the preschool and school children running along the pavement and the numerous trees that make many parts extremely narrow to fit cyclists and pedestrians.
I suppose that I should feel reassured that there are members of our society that have such a compelling desire to protect my child that they will take action. On the other hand, I would prefer if that action did not place them in further danger!
Anyway, if nothing else, a big fat dollop of patronisation must have been good for her soul. I'll gift her that as an early Christmas present. I trust that she felt that she had done her civic duty and did not come across any more irresponsible parenting on her way to work.
Anyone else got any stories to share?
