OK - so I've just got around to sending back my Troy Lee Lopes shin/knee guards. Nothing specifically wrong with them in terms of performance but they had been stitched up poorly and one of the inners had self destructed.

They were pretty good in action and I liked the seperate inner thingy but they slip a bit from time to time if riding with them on essentially XC rides with occasional technical bits. If I'm honest I only bought/wear them not because I'm a hardcore rad hitter, but because since switch to flats (DMR V12) every little off marmalises my shins with the pedals!
So, anything else I should consider for all day pedaling type wearing before I press the buy it now on another pair of Troy Lees and hope the quality control is better this time?
I tried some maces which were long enough to rest on my ankle/foot and hence were quite comfy.
I'm not generally a pad-wearer, but this summer I've used Dainese 3X shins and found them to be comfortable and by far the coolest (in terms of heat) pads I've used.
POC. I've found the vpd knee guard is great to use, pretty unobtrusive for pedalling, but is probably not going to give you the shin protection you want. Maybe check out their Bone VPD leg, which is longer, but I've not used that- all their stuff seems to get rave reviews.
Do you want knee too? I use 661 veggie shins on their own. I barely notice they are on, except for when ****ting a pedal in to my shin doesn't hurt .
I know it sounds couter intuative, but have you considdererd better pedals?
Since takign up BMX and experienceing what proper pedals feel like (the easterns on the BMX feel pretty much like my burgtechs on the MTB) I've actualy mashed my shins less (if at all?). Either im letting go of the pedals less (very likely) or im learning to bail in a way that avoids the pedals?
