[Closed] Best rotors for Avid BB7 - HS1 pulsing and squealing on the front! Back to G2?

Noticed my HS1 180mm discs are seeing some wear on the arms of the discs, and I've had some issues with pulsing during heavy breaking and squealing with different semi metallic brake pads in dry conditions not to mention wet. The BB7 has tall brake pads, and he HS1 is a narrow disc, might be losing some braking power too.

What are the best, good value, options? Avid G2, or perhaps Hayes V8 (hard to find)?

The squealing problem might be in part from city use and sot/dust, no hills where I live to burn it off either. It's evident both front and to the lesser extent rear. Alignment seems perfect with minimal disc bending. I'm going to test superstar kevlar pads as well, but might also benefit from new rotors.

I used to get a lot of squealing with BB7s when I was commuting. Once every 2/3 weeks U detour down a steep hill, pedal like **** and brake. That woyld get them.hit enough to burn off any traffic residue.

As for rotors, you definitely don't want the pad to be sweeping the rotor arm. I've used Shimano rotors with mine and they work well - no pulsing.

From mtbr, added the approximate wear line I see on my rotors.

scotroutesย Thanks! No hills here I'm afraid. Maybe sanding would do the track although a PITA. Which shimano rotors?

I've been.using Centerlock.rotors so not much help to you. It doesn't need anything fancy though.

I've found forumla rotors to be by far the quietest and smoothest rotor with my Shimano xt brakes. Had similar issues to you with hs1 and g3 rotors. G2 are ok, but the formulas are way better.

If you decide to go Formula, drop me a line. Have a set of 203/180 for sale.

That wear line is easily within the limits of normal. If you use the tri-align method to align the caliper, give setting it up by eye a go. A brake works best when both pads are perfectly parallel to the rotor and both pads contact at the same time. Obviously, neither of those requirements can be achieved with cable calipers, hence their being more prone to noise and other vibration.

Yeah wear seems normal, but still not ideal.

How wide is the break surface on formula discs? Anyone tried em with BB7s? Look promising!

Seems like formulas won't work well, as they are 14 mm brake track like the HS1, G2 are 16 mm so are Hayes rotors. Some trials rotors are 20 mm.

So basically looking for 16 mm brake track rotors (or wider?).

Hayes V7 16x1.8mm 156g 30 eur (Out of production, but available)
Hope Trials Zone V2 20x?mm 146g 29 eur
Avid G2 16x1.85mm 145g 24 eur
Magura Julie ?x?mm 179g 15 eur
Magura Storm ?x2mm 140g 23 eur (larger braking zone than SL? less noise than SL)
Magura Storm HC ?x2mm 141g 23 eur (poor modulation at low speed?)
Magura Storm SL2 ?x2mm 118g 23 eur (2 reviewers compared the SL1 model favorably to Avid G2 and HS1 on Avid Juicy/Elixir brakes)

Shimano rotors are either only 160 mm (RT61 would work but 160 mm max) or 14 mm width.

Question is if the Hope Trials Zone, Hayes or Magura rotors would offer improvement over the G2. I've asked magura about track width!
