Manufacturers spec, just go to one of the common online retailers, most generally have some sort of discount.

Actual shops will be best for this. 2 quid a metre for shimano outer and 4 quid for a stainless gear inner (massively better than galvanised in terms of performance and lifespan). Done.

I just stock up on these when Halfords have them on special offer (like they do right now !)

http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_186625_langId_-1_categoryId_165455

You get a good quality SS inner cable, a good quality length of outer (that cuts really well) and six end ferrules, all for £2

Bargain !!

(Remember, you need to book them on-line for collection in store to get them at that price)

Oh, and don't be tempted to buy one of the "cable sets" from Asda for £4
They initially look like a bit of a bargain, getting 2 gear inner+outers, plus 2 brake inner+outers and all ferrules+end crimps for only £4.
The inner cables are galvanised & start to corrode on the first ride.
The "gear" outer cable is actually spiral-wound brake outer !!
The plastic coating on the outer cables splits and cracks very easily.

A good bike shop and use the good stainless and outer that they put on proper bikes.

@Al, SP41 is £1.99 per metre from UK Bike Store, though there is postage to pay.

I have used these http://www.decathlon.co.uk/universal-derailleur-cable-kit-id_3289252.html and will replace my current cables with them, when they start to get sticky.

So the main thing is to go stainless over galvanised. I always buy the SP41 outer.

I tried the singlespeed thing, it was ok but it's rather lonely. You have to ride up every hill on your own.

I buy 10m of SP41 from Parker International and just pick up inner wires when I need them.
