right what's the best hardtail £400 (ish) can buy? maybe an 09 bike but must be new. contenders so far are the specialized hard rock and trek 4500. any other/better suggestions? ta.

Kona Blast from last year looks pretty good on Pauls Cycles, but has mechanical disks. They also have a GT at the same price with Tektro hydraulic disks, but Suntour forks.
On the other hand, they have Giant XTCs with lots of lovely bits on for just north of £400... That'd be my choice to be honest. 9 speed rather than 8, proper hydraulic brakes, better groupset etc.
Carrera Kraken is pretty nice. Wee bit chunky but a good overall spec, the fork is adequate if you look after it. Solid wheels, X5 drivetrain, tektro auriga comp hydros... Mine was a great route back into riding.
