Hi there, I'm doing a 300 mile charity ride at the start of May and my other half (and me) would like to be able to track my progress throughout the day to see how far Ive got.
We've looked at an Apple app which allows this, but like the Google Latitude app, I have to accept the invitation to be tracked. I thought this may be an issue as I probably wouldnt be phone checking till I got back each night. I also dont want to be having an app running that will destroy battery life either.
Just a simple app that she can log in too or update periodically that shows a little dot on a map progressing....at speed hopefully ๐
Thanks.
Ok, put it another way, you need to stalk somebody and only have their phone number, what do you use to pinpoint on a map where they are? ๐
Strava is really good, i have been using it through my iphone.
Its worth a look. Im impressed with it.
Let me know what you think.
find my friends (the apple app) will probably be you best bet for what you want.
The Strava setup seems to be able to see where Ive been but not for someone else to see where I am at anyone time.
That Apple App is slightly creepy. Do I need my Mrs knowing where I am all the time haha.It seems to fit the bill the best though.
Any advances on the above two?
you could see about renting a spot tracker for the duration of the ride?
You ould try cyclemeter. You can set it up so when you start it either tweets, or adds a post to Facebook that contains a link to a web page that shows your real time progress, battery usage isn't too bad, I've done 140+ using it, and it had a fair bit left at the end of the ride.
The Apple app will only use location services/drain your battery using GPS when your wife logs in to check where you are
Just realised this is not what your after, doh! Oh well its good anyway.
+1 for cyclemeter. Switch off wifi & bluetooth, dim brightness and then no battery issues.
Find my Friends will work great provided she is also using an iPhone or iPad. If she only has a computer then you'll be best to give her your iCloud password and use the Find My iPhone app to see youon a map.
The advantage of the apple apps is that you don't need to run anything on the phone, they work in the background and only when someone is looking.
Cycle meter is a great app to log your rides, provide stats, generate gpx etc.
