To cut a long story short my brakes squeal and it's annoying. I'm going to file my pads and clean my discs, I'm going to use white spirits unless anyone can recommend anything better?

Cheers

I have not had good results with the Juice Lubes variant (which smells weird).

This is considerably cheaper and 'just as good as the leading brand'. I suspect white spirit will leave a horrible residue and f*ck your pads????

Edit: Also check the alignment, and maybe wipe them over with some fine emery paper rather than a file?

Surgical spirit. Cheap and readily available from Boots.

Cheers Guys.

I'm going to use sand paper to file the pads.

I'm currently using Superstar pads and have read this is common, plus I suspect the recent spell of dry weather is also a contributing factor.

Callipers will be aligned when Hope return my wheels, which will be another two weeks 😥

Does white spirit not evaporate leaving no residue, or have I got that wrong?

3 rules:

1) Do not spray anything on your disc brakes.
2) DO NOT SPRAY ANTHING ON YOUR DISC BRAKES.
3) Seriously, don't.

Take the rotor off and chuck it in the dishwasher if you have one, or a good scrub in soapy water then rinse with boiling water straight out of the kettle.
Or cover in meths and set it alight

Pads either in the dishwasher or scrub with a wire brush and set alight like the discs, but mainly its easer to replace them.

I've tried pretty much every so called brake cleaner over the years and without exception they have all failed. And meths and a box of matches is cheaper.

No dishwasher (it's me!)

Meths and set alight, seriously?!

Might try the soapy water and rinse idea first!!

I use IPA (not beer). Does the trick.

I had the squeaky brake syndrome and bought some of the Muc off disc brake cleaner and it works a treat, no more squeaking and it's meant to revive your pads which I can agree it seemed to do

Meths and set alight, seriously?!

I'm seriously not kidding.

I do the pads holding them in a vice, friction side up after wire brushing.
I hang the disc on a spoke, splash a bit on and light it, then repeat.
I promise it does work. I've done it literally 40.50,60 times.... Something like that.
If I need to retain the current pads I ALWAYS set light to them, the disc it depends on how I'm feeling on the day and if I need the boiling water for tea or not. Both ways work. 🙂

+1 for meths. I don't set mine on fire as it it evaporates and I rub most of it off with a cotton cloth (aka old socks) to remove the grime. Works a treat on pads and discs.

Setting it alight burns everything off. Leaving it to evaporate leaves a residue like a spray on cleaner.

Hmmmmm, think I might try Meths but I'm not a fire bug so I may miss that bit out, and I value my garage!!

Or I might try good old soapy water, with some Muc Off disc cleaner on standby 🙂

As I said: surgical spirit. It does a great job and doesn't leave residue like meths. No need for fire, unless you want to, of course.

I put rotors and pads in a pan of boiling water for 5 mins. Then give the pads a quick sand.

I use Isopropanol on rotors, good scrub followed by burning any residue off.
