10 speed xt cassette and rear mech. How do I make these work with Shimano 105 10 speed sti's on my Gryphon or are they just not going to work together. All explained to lbs who said no problem but can't get to index properly.
You'll need to use a 9spd Shimano mech to make it work.
so, will that allow me to get all 10 gears and will that index ok.
Yup (although not sure how it would cope with a 36t sprocket if you're using one of those).
10 speed Shimano mtb mechs use a different pull ratio to the 9 speed ones.
yup, 11-36!!
9 speed Shadow rear mech will be fine.
Simple answer is you won't get them to work as Dynasys isn't compatible with Shimano 10 speed road, the LBS should have known this (time to find a new one) as with others, use a 9 speed RD.
thanks for all of the above, so, a 9 speed xt rear mech will do the job for my 11x36 - any particular cage length??
You need a Shadow one to comfortably do the 11-36, if it's s triple I'd go long (SGS), if it's a double/single I'd go medium (GS).
thanks njee20, its for a 1x10 set up so 'gs' it is.
isn't the distance between sprockets less with 10sp than 9sp - is it close enough for indexing to work properly ??
It's all about how much cable the rear mech pulls - 10 speed road shifters and 9 speed MTB mechs are cross compatible, but not the other way around.
Ah, I see now
(my STIs are 9sp and have just realised you don't mean them) ๐ณ
(incidentally, a rapid-rise mtb mech is grrrreeaat on a road bike) ๐ณ ๐ณ
lots of good info on this on some of the cyclocross and three peaks forums.
Chris Juden in the CTC mag was saying 10 Spd shimano STI levers would work with 9 Speed Shimano MTB Long Cage rear Mechs on Sram MTB 10 Speed cassettes (he said up to 36 tooth but 34 might be wiser because that was the max they were used with) with a Shimano/sram 10 speed road chain.
I haven't tried it yet.
I can confirm that Shimano 10 spd mtb kit is in no way compatible with Shimano rd 10 speed kit.
The cassette can be a 10-speed Shimano MTB - e.g. XT.billyboy - Member

Yaay. 11/36 XT 10 speed casset. 9 speed XT GS rear mech. STI 105 front shifter. All working spot on. Singular Gryphon about to go out on maiden voyage.
