Ben Chonzie and / or something else?

I want to add some mountains to my mountain biking this year.

Ben Chonzie seems a good place to start and I found this on Komoot.

https://www.komoot.com/tour/1059627186?ref=itd&share_token=aMAKghevzrAyc7NdpKCgqyj7QEpuytuj5EkwbUzvtC6KMEa4Mx

Is this the best way to go? Where else should I go from Comrie / Crieff?

Weather for Monday is looking good and AFAIK there’s not much snow up there at the moment.

Cheers 🙂

It's one of the less interesting munros but it's all rideable. The top will be very wet after the rain we had yesterday but not unrideable.

If you're strong you can pedal all the way up. The descent isn't much to write home about but it's a nice day out and that route (if it's what I think it is, Komoot as ever is shite and doesn't show you the route if you don't have an account) is the best way to do it.

Auchnafree might be better as a route if you're not fussed about doing a Munro, almost as high and can be made into a loop starting and finishing at Comrie croft, win!

Cheers, I don’t want anything too exciting to descend as I’ll be on my own, so it could be ideal apart from the wetness. I think the next few days are looking drier.

I’ll probably take the e-bike but may change my mind at the last minute if I feel like more of a challenge.

@13thfloormonk thanks, I’ll have a look at that. Doesn’t have to be a Munro at all, just want to get out and explore a bit more.

Critique my route I’ve just drawn please? Particularly the bit from Ben Chonzie and down into Glen Turret.

Is this bit rideable?

If so it’s about the right length for tomorrow, it’s going to be cold but sunny & could be a good day 🙂

Enjoy - it's a great day out in the hills. Watch the speed on the descent, that track tempts you to have all the speeds at times....

Been meaning to do this for a while, let us know how you get on! Great day for it, absolute cracker.

That bit in the green circle is going to be seriously steep...(Captain Obvious with that statement!) - I suspect with the skills it will be 'ok', but might be sensible to accept it might need to be scrambled carrying bike.

@DickBarton That’s what I thought. Is that from experience or just looking at the map?

Can I keep going before turning right?

Going to head out soon so I guess I’ll find out!

Looking at the map, I'm afraid - been up top of Ben Chonzie a few times (although not for 20-odd years!) and to my shame, I've never ventured further north of the top...have seen some stuff that looked like a wee trail and it did look to drop down, but it was a distance away and I didn't go and investigate (I should have thinking back now!).

Only just seen this. I don't think the suggested route up viable. Far better to take the track up the South Western Side of Loch Turret and then continue up to Carn Chois. The summit is a bit bouldery by it is very short. It is then a nice track up to the summit of Chonzie. The trip down to Invergeldie is great but seriously fast in places and can get busy.
Alternatively just go up and down from Invergeldie. You can pedal all the way up by it takes some doing.

I think you’re right, looking at it now and I think the bit I circled is where the snow patch is on the right

Not quite, that's this bit here

See how the rock patches/lines or trails match

Edited for better accuracy

Still, I don't think you'll be able to get down that section to the north, that's a fence line not a trail, down a gully between 2 cliff faces... 🤨

Is this bit rideable

WTAF... no. Not even slightly. It appears to be an average gradient of 51%.

I've done various paths verging on 40% ( eg Heron Pike) and they were right at my limit. Generally I view anything above 35% as too steep unless it's a great surface.

Chosing a 51% slope with no actual path down it seems a tad optimistic.

But happy to hold the camera. 🙂

I've walked up there in the summer from the Glen Turret side then west at the dam, bogs for a hundred metres where I was up to my knee maybe deeper at bits but sneaky unseen ones so venture off track and you will get caught like me, on a clear day great views from the top all round

No it wasn’t 😁

And further along didn’t look much better, I was hoping I could carry on and then turn right later but it would be a long way to find out I’d need to turn around.

Came back over Carn Chois.

Nice day out 🙂

If you want a simple mountain to ride, I can highly recommend Schiehallion.

It's an out and back rather than a loop, and you'll only want to go to the first cairn (880m ish) on the bike as the remaining couple of hundred metres ascent to the summit is a proper boulder field. It's a fantastic descent, will be a push up most of the way - all rideable on the way down, as a soft southerner I walked a couple of bits but I'm aiming to go back in a few weeks and ride it all.

Out and back took me under 2hrs in a evening.

You will upset the John Muir Trust riding down their path , Schiehallion is much better from the West and popping your head at the top surprising the folk at the summit
A good run would be started at Kenmore then up to Keltneyburn , all off road round the base of Schiehallion then a blast down to Fortingall , you then have Drummond hill and then back down to Kenmore

Didn't even know you could get up to the peak from the west, looking at the maps there's no discernible trail that I can see (maybe the odd feint deer path).

There's a track from Tempar up to a bothy then turn left and keep climbing

What’s the track like between Chonzie and Carn Chois? Tried it many years ago but it turned into more of a bog snorkelling experience.

Quite boggy but some of it was frozen which helped. Had to push for a bit and jump between the high spots to avoid the worst of it.
