Looking to buy a new 'regular' use open face helmet to replace my well worn Endura Singletrack and at the same time I'm looking for a full face helmet now that I'm making more frequent trips to BPW and Antur Stiniog.
I live in a flat and space is a bit of an issue so am considering a Bell Super 2R helmet with removeable chin bar.
I appreciate it won't offer quite as much protection as a proper full face so I'm wondering if it would be better to get two separate cheaper lids.
I've got one and like the ability to switch before I ride or even carry the chin guard if I think I might need it. It's not my only helmet and I'd use another on hot days as I get a very warm head.
In terms of robustness the latches are firm and work well. Not sure what they'll be like a year later though.
Defo worth getting 2 separate lids imho
Plenty of good deals on quality trail and DH lids and probably save money over the 2r
If I was to have only one lid it would be the 2R hands down. I tend to use my 2R with the chin guard on most of the time. It wasn't available when I first started riding so I do still have a Fox full face and Fox trail lid but the 2R with guard on is what I use for 90% of my riding now. Even for DH tracks. Chin guard on for winter riding is great too because it keeps a bit of the freezing wind off your face but it's still not too hot in mid summer either. In fact my trail lid gets much sweatier than my 2R with chin guard on does. The proper FF is boil your head hot. I love my 2R.
The other great thing about the 2R is that a pair of googles can live under the visor when not in use. It's a really well designed lid.
The Bell is great design. I have had mine for just coming up to a year and use it for every ride. I love the fact that you add/remove the guard without taking it off. Build wise I have no complaints 12 months on. I have another full face but haven't used it since getting the bell.
For uplifted gravity riding, where weight isn't that important, i still use my cheapo full facer. It's much heavier than my 2R, but in the completely subjective "grab the chin bar and wobble it" test it's WAY stiffer than the 2R chin bar. I guess when you aren't that worried about weight, it's easy to make something strong.
