I've loads of play in my BB which came with a Deore 9-speed chainset. What can I replace it with... Will any "HTII" bottom bracket do or is it more complicated than that?
I'm expecting to be pointed to an XTR from Germany, but just wanted to be sure there's not some finer detail I'm missing and end up with the wrong part.

Nope just go buy one (deore/slx or xtr) from Rose bikes... there settled all your concerns in one easy post.
