the gypsy kids at school were tough..

I got into a scrap with a Roma lad at primary but escaped unscathed.. the lad just seemed very frustrated and kicked me up the arse a few times.. looking back I imagine he was under strict instructions not to fight at school.. even then it was obvious he could have swatted me like a fly..

I saw the same lad in a fight when he was about 15.. this time with another gypsy from a notorious Irish family that lived on a different site..

There were often pre-arranged fights at lunchtime that usually only lasted a few minutes at most and amounted to nothing more than scuffles.. but these two lads boxed consistently and brutally, like men, for an hour and 20 minutes solid, and walked away after with tattered clothes and blackened eyes and blood flowing freely from numerous cuts and swellings.. the traditional crowd of cheering schoolfight spectators melted away quietly long before the end..

I also saw the notorious kid fight his older brother in a similar manner but the fight was more intense and feral.. I later learned that one brother murdered the other in their late teens/early twenties..

at least they settle disputes with clean hands, not like the cowards who walk around wi knives and guns.

oh yeah.. for sure

There were a few that mixed with the English kids and they were very fun-loving and loyal and interested in our lives.. we all used to go out together occasionally for a while after we left school..

I'm still mates with a couple of those lads on facebook.. one of them is the Roma laddie from primary..

Not sure I was keen on the "never give in" attitude, and how brutal the fights looked as a result. But apart from that I was surprised at how disciplined they were with training and following the rules while fighting.

It wasn't as far removed from boxing as I thought it would be. With the purses put up, refereeing, and compromises (I wanted to fight on a Friday, they wanted to fight on a Thursday so we decided on Wednesday!).

James' brother seemed to be a bit of a nutter though.

I had to go to bed, so have recorded the last half hour. Fascinating.

Reminds me of the traveller community I grew up near (went to school with and who my sister used to run around with 😯 ).

I watched it for a bit then had to turn it off. There's only so much ranting and shouting at video cameras I can take before it gets irritating.

Watched a similar program a few months ago where one of the Guys was fighting with someone from a different site and got a really good kicking when a few more joined in. He lost it big style and went back later that night and was nearly killed when they used Axes / Machettes & Baseball Bats on his head and upper Body.

Strangely addictive to watch. The country lane setting with them getting knocked into a bush made me chuckle. "Had enough Paddy"?

£120k was on the last fight, but it was a bit of a let down.

Must admit though, I'm glad I wasn't born into that way of life (no offense intended).

it was fascinating ans quite scary in equal measure]
the two grandads fighting was tragic but it is how they settle disputes

Sadly some disputes seemed to be about nothing in particular but the last fight

There was a similar documentary a few months back, only caught a bit of it but that had become really nasty. Machettes and such like.

/Edit After a bit of googling

That was a programme called Gypsy Blood, the fella getting kicked in with machetes etc was a ref to a fight earlier in the day but the evening got out of hand and all concerned got p$£sed up and the fight broke out.

Was an interesting programme to be fair.

We had a traveller on one of our wings a few months ago with one of the family names that was mentioned in the programme, he was a proper mouthpiece, notorious bully & let everyone one know he was a scrapper. He was given a good slapping by a non travelling, quiet kid from Leeds, which seemed to please a lot of folk.
We get a fair few travelling lads in & the majority are pretty much ok, the banter's always good with them to be sure, to be sure! 😉

Big of an insight into the dark side of human nature. A lot of pride and 'honour' involved. Part sport, part dispute resolution (not very effective!), part sport and part gaming with big money. Not sure whether to admire or detest the whole thing. Not sure I would measure up to the expectations of living in a community like that.

I think there was bit of WWE in this. Certainly not with the fighting that was real enough. I think the "disputes" looked a bit manufactured, yes there was a historic basis for them (death of a family member with some blame attributed). But I think they were dragged up each time as an excuse to get people willing to fight again, and to get people to stump up the money for a purse.

Wouldn't surprise me if the two top men in each family secretly shared a cut of the winnings, and riled the others up to get them to fight.

The ref was the same for every fight (in Ireland) and interestingly in the last fight the gipsy who was on celebrity big brother was even there as a ref.

Yes, I noticed that too. A LOT of money changing hands.

I think its just they haven't moved on, (and everyone else has gotten soft)

I remember hearing stories about my grandfather fighting gypsies for money in the 50's as he was Irish (and not a gyppo)and ****ing hated the Irish gypsies and my father can remember seeing him having his ear stitched back on in his kitchen growing up where it had been torn in a fight, apparently even then it was a way to settle scores and make a lot of money.

I wouldnt like to get on the wrong side of Paddy (Big Brother 'fame') or the leaner meaner gypsy in the £60k fight at the end but as for the others.....give me £10/15k and I wouldnt hesitate. Lots of arm swinging and not alot of go, alot of mouth and some poor action.
