Anyone got any experience of taking bikes with KLM? It looks like you can take a bike as your checked luggage, but anymore than just the bike would incur the extra charges? Trying to get from Scotland to Geneva and KLM with a stop in Amsterdam is by fat the cheapest way of doing it. Half the price of going with Easyjet from Edinburgh. Bit worried about getting all our stuff there and/or the bikes not making there at the same time we do due to the stop in Amsterdam.

Any experiences/advice would be great!

I have used KLM a few times going to NY from Manchester via Amsterdam. They really are great, one of the few airlines who don't give you a problem. I used one of those massive bike boxes, as long as it was within the weight limit they were fine with the dimensions. One thing though, you may need to ring up the customer service centre to book it on, there is usually some friendly dutch guy on the other end of the phone, exshellent.

I've also travelled with Delta, American and United who are all theiving bastards. Air France is touch and go, it seems you just need to be lucky with the check in person.

Thanks ds3000, looks like they could be a go-er. I'll just have to figure out how to get enough gear for a weeks riding, inc a full face helmet, split between the bike bag and hand luggage.

I'm always surprised how much I can get away with in hand luggage - you could always wear the full face helmet on the plane!

Flew Edinburgh-Amsterdam-Madrid and return with KLM with a bike last year. Seem to recall no extra charge for the bike and it was included as normal luggage, but that you have to book it on the flight.

The check-in desk at Madrid tried to stiff me and claimed I hadn't booked the bike on. Make sure you take your paperwork!.

Was the bike your only checked luggage, or did just count towards your maximum weight limit? Think I best give them a call and see what they say. Cheers guys.

You can have 1 piece of checked luggage, i.e your bike box/bag with whatever else you can fit in under the weight limit (50lbs I think).

I've used easyjet with no problems. bike protected with pipe lagging, pedals off bars tip tied too side of frame forks etc. shoes bike gear in with bike rest in luggage, had helmet attached to rucsac as hand luggage. No probs as long as its within the weight and size allowances

Same here, problem is they want £370 odd and KLM want less than £200!
