The bamboo stuff from the brand BAM. Base layers any good - in the real world - for riding/hiking? Is it a bit like merino in terms of properties? Ta for any info.

I wear BAM base layers all the time. Comfy, cheap and great warmth for winter. In fact, I only have BAM boxers for everyday wear now.

I prefer BAM to merino, still prone to holding moisture, but without the slight Woolley smell

My go to base layer.
Warm breathable and pong free.
Gave up padded shorts in favour of thick BAM boxers the tightest I can get into.

Feels nice and soft, sucks up damp and takes ages to dry. If you run cold it might work, if you're sweaty, avoid. The best non 100% synthetic I've used is merino / polyester blend stuff - Montane and Rab both do versions, the former's called Primino, the Rab stuff used to be MeCo, but I think is now just sold as 'Merino', though if you check the fabric details it's actually a bend,
