Back riding after broken collarbone / appendicitis

As above, hadn’t ridden since the 20th June when I had a big over the bars on the Climach X final downhill and broke my collarbone. Had it plated in July and was coming back to life a bit then got appendicitis in September and had to have appendix and part of my bowel out 🤦‍♂️

Went out for my first mtb Saturday just gone for a small 9k ish ride round Ashton Court in Bristol. Lovely weather / relatively dry trails and riding my Top Fuel for the first time (I sold my Privateer DJ101 and picked up a secondhand frame and fork and build up with stuff I mostly had already plus an slx drivetrain I bought). Feels pretty rapid considering I haven’t ridden in ages.

I think it’s going to be a slow recovery back to where I was - few more short / flat rides and see if I can build from there).

So good to be back out in the fresh air / woods just chilling on my bike.

Well that’s a bad run of luck - glad you’re back out, and on a speedy new bike!

Thanks both - bike was pretty good and most of me felt ok riding. Just don’t want to push my luck too far too early so going to be flat / pedally rides for a while (hence the TF). I did try a bit of muddy / leafy off piste which was a bit scary after so long out / not a huge amount of rear tyre grip.

Wow back on the bike already, fair play I was off for 7months, but they wouldn't plate me. I was surprised how quickly I got back up to speed after getting back out, though I only broke my collarbone (& a lovely frozen shoulder). I assumed it would hurt a lot but really didn't. The physio surprised me as to how much you can still do with the arm, even with a broken collar bone.

Have fun!

Some pretty rotten luck but good to see you're back on the bike. I had my first proper layoff this year, 13 weeks for a broken scaphoid, and it really does suck!

With the collarbone the NHS weren’t going to do anything other than leave it in a sling and hope for the best. The ends of the bones were 1.5cm apart though - at best they’d join with a huge dogleg in it - and it was poking into the muscle that sits above my collarbone.

Luckily my job comes with private health cover so I went private to get a 2nd opinion. Decided to get it plated - and healing has gone fine. Got signed off this month to ride a bike outside. My decision next year is whether to take the plate out or not. I’m 50/50 on that at the moment.

Well done and good luck. Took me about 10 weeks from breaking my pelvis and hip socket to be back on a turbo, then 12 weeks to get out on the CX bike from January. Been a slow recovery but commuting again, although its halved my miles this year.

That sounds like a brutal injury - good work getting back to it!

My legs actually feel pretty good - just don’t want to strain my core too much too early or fall off and mangle my collarbone when it has a plate in there 😖
