What pads are people using? Standard organic = squeal. Tried Superstar sintered = MEGA squeal 😥 (at least I can get my money back, got four pairs) Both the same with standard and Uberbike floating rotors. Aztec sintered in my R1's are superb but Aztec don't make a pad for the XO trail. Heard the Uberbike are good but don't want to keep buying pads that are crap. Thanks in advance, BTW tried the forum search function but nothing relative came up.
I've got the X9 Trail, same caliper, same lever, just a bush not a bearing - so comparable.
I'm using Superstar Kevlar, and have been using the standard organic.
Every brake will squeal in the wet, if you're getting too much, then you need to sort out the alignment, or bed in the pad properly.
The other option is you've got a contaminant on the rotors, I may well be telling you how to suck eggs - but I've really not found a compound on any pad that makes that much diffence for noise between brands. e.g. Superstar sintered vs UBC sintered vs branded sintered = same noise and performance.
Sintered will always make more noise than non-sintered, as it's a higher friction compound = more energy = some of that transferred into noise.
The Race Matrix were great in the Alps, but they disappeared in the mud in Kirroughtree.
In summary - use the pads you've got, figure out the problem with your set up and don't buy more pads - as you're going to have the same problem.
Rickon, don't think it a setup or bed in problem.I have Formula R1's on my Turner and they require near perfect setup due to the tight pad to disc clearance.Standard organic squeal like a good un in the wet but running sintered Aztec and they are silent in any conditions bar the usual grit grind that clears as soon as you feather the brakes. The Avid's are on a new bike so not had much time to experiment yet,many thanks for your comments though.Might contact Aztec to see if they are planning to offer any in the future
XO trails here with superstar Kevlar, don't squeel any more than other brakes I've used.
superstar kevlar pads here too, mine are silent with them.
X0 trails are comfortably the best brake on the market at the moment in my opinion.
I'd argue the x9 trails would get that title, same weight, same internals, different stickers and a bush instead of a bearing the the lever. And a huuuge difference in price 🙂
I've been running x0 elixirs for years, and the x9 trails are hands down better. Much better than the 6 or 7 sets of XT and XTR brakes I've had too.
