Thinking of selling my Avid codes (older style )for a while now even though they work tip top and dare I say a bit too much power! Just feel thy are bit much for meta 6? Thinking of the Formula oro k24 brakes as they seem pretty good and can get a good deal on them and are lighter. Is it worth selling the codes for them or just stick with what I'v got?
Hey... shame no one has responded to this yet! I've used Formula oro k18s for about a year or so and I think they're pretty similar to the K24s. I think the K18s are pretty superb for the money, well put together, faultlessly reliable and with 185 / 165mm rotor combo - awesomely powerful, with great modulation. The only thing they lack is that pimpy 'wow' factor and any adjustability of lever bite point. But, TBH the lack of adjustment just means there's less to fiddle with! The piston bores appear to be arranged so that the pads meet the rotors at a slight angle, which is why I think they have great power and modulation, but it does mean that the pads wear down a few mm more on one side of the pad than the other.
Don't know much about the Codes, but I hope that helps! ๐
Formula > Avid. avid break.
I've ran juicy 5's, elixir 5's and CR's and never had a problem ... a friend of mine who uses Formula brakes has had nothing but problems.
...and I have Formula RX brakes, haven't had any probs (touch wood) and think they're great.
if the codes working in tip top condition why bother you can never have too much brake
Cheers for the reply's, still unsure though! ๐
Recently bought some formula megas direct from formula - very light and massive power. Levers have bite point adjusters too.
Had avid juicys & they were very good but very sensitive to bleeding, whereas the formulas seem a bit less sensitive.
running formula r1's, lost a few lever bolts, otherwise very powerful and light.
K24s are a well proven brake, never had any bother with either of my sets. Other than it being a total total b*****d to change levers. But they're powerful, cheap, reasonably light, easy to live with, parts are easy to get... Total win, really.
Got elixirs on my xc bike , had k24's on my dh, went to hope but just returned to Formula. The K24's performed faultlessly, feel better then my Elixirs and imho are the ones to go for.
Just fitted Elixir's to my new FS build with 185F/R, only done two rides so far but they've both been at a wet & dirty Llandegla, brilliant so far, better than the SLX they replaced on initial impressions
Definition of frustration = changing Avid pads, anywhere but a warm well equipped garage.
After 3 years of grief I've just gone from Avid Juicy 7/carbon to Hope X2's.
Formulas FTW - I've had Oro K18s for 2 years with nary a service other than changing pads.
Avid Juicy 7s, on the other hand, were unreliable in the extreme...
Formula it is then.
I have Avid Exlixir CR's 203mm x 2 on my Niner and Formula 'The One' 185 x 2 on my Cube Stereo, the Formula's win hands down on every count.
They squeal less
Have better stopping power (on a heavier bike)
The pistons squeeze evenly
Have better feel.
What on earth are you people doing to your Juicys? I've had a pair of 7's on constant DH duty since 2007 and they haven't skipped a beat! Bleeding is an absolute piece of p*ss too.

In those circumstances I'm sure they'll be fine, but try replacing the pads in a January rainstorm half-way through a 40 miler just before the Roman Road descent...
