[Closed] Avid Juicy 7s and Shimano rotors... Pah!

Just had a ride with a newly fitted 6 bolt Shimano rotor. I noticed when fitting it that the braking surface is a good bit narrower than the existing Avid rotor.

The pad is overlapping the outer braking surface by a fair bit and braking on the legs of the rotor.

Is this going to be a problem? It looks like there are spacers on the Avid Calipers to move them outwards - is this a bad idea?

Any opinions welcomed, thanks.

I have had some issues as you describe with juicy 5s and 7s. I have spaced them further away from the axle centre using washers/shims with no ill effects. A few mm is fine, just dont try to space up a 160mm adapter to a 180mm disc.

Have run them like this for a year or so and no problems ๐Ÿ™‚

Cheers - that means some of the pad's braking area is unused though right? That is, it will overhang the edge of the rotor and cause uneven pad wear?

EDIT: really foxy? Might just leave them as they are then - I just wondered if the sharpish edges on the rotor arms would destroy my pads - seemingly not ๐Ÿ™‚

Yes and No

Yes it will reduce the braking area/power a bit but the pad wears OK as it will wear down the rotor arms a bit but just keep an eye on it - mine are a bit worn but OK otherwise ๐Ÿ™‚

I have swapped them back to my avid rotors now but only coz I couldn't be bothered to do it for a year - oops ๐Ÿ˜‰

Adjust it so that the outside edge of the pad is just shy of the edge of the disc. If the pads run over onto the rotor legs a bit its no real hassle.

Right cheers for that - I'll shift them about a bit tomorrow just to get as much of the pads touching the rotor as poss. Sounds like it shouldn't make too much odds though. Off to Darlo jump track tomorrow so hopefully won't run out of brake ๐Ÿ™‚

Yep same as Foxy....been running Shimano rotors with Juicy 5s for months with no problem. In fact I thought they were better than the G2 rotors they replaced

Running shimano xt discs on 7's no probs I actually agree they are better than the originals

I think avid use 185 front and xt are 180 but I could be wrong !

The discs which came with my Juicy 7s were 160mm front and rear, but it is a Halfords bike......
