The pistons on my juicy 5s don't appear to be returning. Is there a simple way of sorting this out or will the brakes need bleeding? Thanks
Fish the wheel out and pop a large, flat blade screwdriver in there and lever the pistons back into their proper positions. This should sort it. You might want to fish the pads out first.
Thanks. Yeah I've tried that and the pistons go back, but when I pull the brake on they work but then don't return to their original position - as if they're sticking.
GT85 as a cleaning solution and a cotton bud.
Remove pads hold one piston back and use the brake lever to advance the other. Add a little GT85 and clean with cotton bud. Push the piston back in and then repeat on the same piston a couple of times. Then do the other piston.
Then hope the GT85 hasn't ruined your piston seals - 'cos some people on here reckon it does - though it's been OK for me.
I tend to do the same cleaning process as igm but use the brake fluid for the brake type (dot 5 for hopes/ mineral for shimano) as the cleaning fluid/lube. Teased out a haynes sticky piston last night, so hopefully have a working front brake for tonights ride!
Have you recently changed pads to aftermarket ones?
I had the same problem with sticking pistons (& binding brakes) after swapping to Superstar pads. Bloke in the LBS recommended scraping off the paint around the edge of the backing plate & problem solved.
To be honest, the pistons do stick slightly & one moves far easier than the other, but removing the extra material around the edge of the pad has freed it all up so the brakes don't bind now. Been like that since about a week before the Wiggle Enduro 6 (was that late April??)
