Any ideas how I could go about tracing further info about the owners?

As tempting as it must be I would give it a miss. Given that you have reported it to the cops if you had a direct discussion the cops might get a tad suspicious. Although that said sadly i suspect she wont be the only victim of the morons so could take that line.

Not a pleasant post to read Jon/ stealthcat.

Personally and I can only word this in a non "legal" way.. I think it's a personal violation and indefensible.

Hope they are traced by the police.

Glad she is OK and well done to her for recalling the number plate. Now you will need some evidence of who was in the passenger seat. That will be harder. CCTV footage may help.

As for the photo did you include a ruler? Not for the size of your wife's derriere, more for a guide to the hand size

It is sexual assault and there is case law. They could well go on the sexual offenders register (it has happened)

would be hard to prove a "slap" on the ass is sexual.

What could it otherwise be? How could you prove it's NOT sexual?

So sorry, OP, to you and yours - can only guess how utterly infuriating that must be.

I'm genuinely sad to hear this and can only echo the sensible replies before in saying well done for contacting the police and one can only hope that there is some retribution.

Leaving out the idiot posts - this is serious; it's unwanted sexual behaviour, it's an assault as in it's unwanted physical contact, it's dangerous driving. At the most basic human level, it's offensive; then we have the slightly more informed view as expounded in so many earlier posts - other than poah; wtf is he on?

See Cougar's post(s) above ^^^

Other than that, it's ok; errr, no it absolutely is not.

If the police are slow to respond, I strongly suggest you escalate quickly before it drops off their radar.
Use social media at the first sign the police are not showing much interest; email chief constables in both forces telling them you are sharing this in print/broadcast/social media, post to both forces' fb & twitter accounts, contact relevant local papers - sheffield star being one?; contact local radio; set up fb chat group; a petition to both police forces challenging their lack of response.

If it was any female family member of mine I would have pitchfork and sharpened weapons at the ready, waiting in lay-by on your missus's route and then wait for halfwits to trundle along. After that..........

No, I'm not joking.

Meathead bloke on a bike + blonde wig + lycra. Lay a honey trap.

I don't want to sound negative here but further to my post above I don't hold out much hope of the police making a big deal of this. But I'm saying this in hope that you can prepare for the brush offs that I think are inevitable rather than trying to put you off following it up.
(some basic assumptions follow)

A lack of witnesses or corroborating evidence is a big one.

The fact that it would have been the passenger who did the deed distances him from the registered keeper who is the only person whose name the police will have.

There's also how relevant they see you as being. Coming across as someone who could kick up a stink as suggested by Frank could be useful. Definitely something to keep up your sleeve.

Personally I've had enough of police. There are some good ones but the majority I've dealt with are arrogant, ignorant and negligent, enough of them to make me mistrustful of all of them, that's sad.
I hope you find a competent one, it may be worth trawling through social media and seeing if you can find a local one who sounds ok and asking for them, they seem to love twitter and all that crap nowadays.

Update: Police are treating this as sexual assault; they have been to take a statement from me, and say they have identified the van's owner.
I could be wrong, but I got the feeling he might be quite well-known to them...

Just wondering what would happen if the driver didn't identify the passenger who did the slap. His story being giving a lift to stranger, vauge acquaintance "only know his name is Bob", looking at the road didn't realise he did anything, all that sort of stuff. Would the police actually be able to do anything ? 🙁

I did make the point to the police that if the passenger was close enough to hit me, the van has to have been way too close...

Unless, of course, it was someone with similar arm length to Perchypanther, then they'd be able to smack you from the other side of the road.*

*Joke, obvs. No one has arms as long as PP...

Edit : Also - anyone else seeing that shit Monty Python sketch about psycho cars when reading the thread title?

Those of you on here who don't think this is sexual assault. It doesn't matter what you think. You may want to do some research before you post but that's not my problem.

That is all.

What Frankconway & curto80 said, basically.

I know we often put humour in threads (more often than not) but this isn't even remotely amusing.

It was by all accounts, assault & dangerous driving & couldv'e ended a lot worse than it did.

And probably placed that close, deliberately so the offence could take place.
Hope you get a result.

Coincidentally, about a year ago and just up the road from there the passenger leaned out of a white transit and tried to slap me on the head as he went past, at about 30. Did it to a guy behind me too. Wonder if it's the same van.

No idea as I haven't dissected every post, but if the cap fits........

This is no jokey matter. If someone slapped your wife's arse in the street would you think it was ok? Just the same in this case innit.
Even potentially & more importantly is the dangerous driving bit.

Hmmm, untaxed transit van,

Horrible attitude to women,

got the feeling he might be quite well-known to them...

Am i the only one thinking that this may be an induvidual of "transitory abode" ?

Update (or not) on this.

I got a call from SYP on Saturday 16th saying that the offence had taken place in Derbyshire Constabulary's area, so SYP were sending the details to them, and I should hear in "three or four days".

Nothing.

I don't have a contact for Derbyshire, and don't know whether the crime reference was also transferred, but they certainly haven't been in touch.

I have tried to contact Woodseats police station to see if they can tell me what has happened, but they don't answer the phone, and don't reply to voicemails or Facebook messages.

Now at the point of signing up to Twitter to see if that gets me anywhere - any other suggestions?

Contact SYP to ask them what the new ref number for derbyshire is, it should be linked.

Call 101, wait for 15 mins, and then you'll probably get through to someone who can give you the new reference number. Woodseats isn't manned; Snig Hill in town centre is the nearest.

Sounds like an awful experience made worse by the police 'losing it down the back of the sofa'.

Whilst it seems feeble, signing up for a twitter account and copying in something like the local paper or british cycling might help. Most institutions/companies don't like to have someone complaining where everyone can see it and it can't be removed.

If the po-po have dropped it/turned a blind eye then I'd kick up all hell making everyone aware that you've been sexually assaulted and that something needs to be done, especially if he's a known person to them. Post the vehicle reg on every form of social media you can lay your hands on, especially in the local area as it's likely someone will know him..

Sounds bloody awful !

Have you rung the Police non emergency number ?

They can put you thtough to the correct area where you can speak to a human. The Police have told you it's sexual assault so tell them that you were sexually assaulted and no one appears to be following it up

If no joy straight on to

https://www.ipcc.gov.uk/complaints

They have a telephone number on that page.

As to social media you need to be very careful. There was a radio programme only last week stating that lots of cases are being lost these days as people are sharing too much information on social media.

Social media would be along the lines of "police taking no action on sexual assault and dangerous driving even when they have all the vehicle details" rather than giving details of the vehicle online as yet...

10 years ago I ended up at Sheffield main police station asking for most senior person on duty, following similar 'meh' response from SYP to an assault on me (while riding).
It got immediate response - and followed up by work being done, court case and chap got a year inside.

police taking no action on sexual assault and dangerous driving even when they have all the vehicle details

That there is prejudice and could mean it gets thrown out. It's not a sexual assault or dangerous driving until successful prosecution.

While SYP aren't too bad, Derbyshire has an absolutely shocking attitude towards cyclists with policies in place to brush as much under the carpet as possible. Please keep the pressure on and don't let them get away with it.

Bobbins!

- She was the victim of a sexual assault.
- The perpetrator has not yet been prosecuted.

The latter does not prevent the former being true.
