Are they? As I am not impressed with the lifespan or price of middleburns rings

It'll depend on which spider you have on the Middleburns...

They are the same BCD as shimano on both the five bolt and four bolt spiders....so in theory YES......... BUT in my experience you might have to do some filing to make them fit.

The ones I've had personal interface with have complied in the end though.

mostly yes, though their latest rings have a different inner diameter (about 2mm difference).Pick an older model and you should be fine.

1999 XT outer and granny fit an MB 4 arm spider.

MB make a special spider for XTR rings (and special rings for XTR spiders)

Spiders can be changed.
