In my experience, most mountain bikers, especially downhillers, are some kind of engineer. I use this term loosley, including mechanics, chippies and the like.

Are you an engineer?

Or something else, if so what?

I think according to your loose definition of engineer I may well be one. But I would usually regard myself as a lawyer. 😉

I'm a law-talking guy, as Lionel Hutz would say, too. There seem to be a few of us on this forum.

Philosophically engineer is nomenclature that might adequately describe me, however, I am actually an artist.

Possibly I am.
But really I'm a salesman.

And Smee is a driving instructor.

I sell shite to people who don't need it.

IME most contributors on cycling forums would like others to think they have some engineering expertise, but have in fact, nothing of the sort... 😉

I am part of a production team that build/engineer a product, so you might be able to say I am an engineer. But I'm not, I'm an artist.

Although it is fair to say that if you ask the forum in the afternoon you will not get answers from all of the prostitutes, assassins, stunt pilots, big game hunters, astronauts or engine drivers on here, as they are not bored at their desks at this time of day.

I guess i'm mechanically minded, and seem to have inherited my dad's love of mechanical things, who does happen to be an engineer. My great uncle was apparently good at mechanical engineering in how he made things for his farm, but not actually qualified as one. Officially though i'm just somebody who like's tinkering with things.

Given how retarded many of the posts are on here are, I certatainly hope most aren't engineers.

Eg:

- Bearing numbers
- re-greasing bearings
- bolt torques
- changing brake pads
- anything asked by Racing Ralph

etc
etc
etc

if you can answer this question in under 3 minutes you can be an engineer:

Which is the 6th number?
1, 2, 6, 42, 1806, ___???

Did no one read the carbon fibre thread. You must think your an engineer to post on here and you must think that everyone else is a crap engineer who posts on here. I don't think however that it is necessary to actually be an engineer. 🙂

I am not an engineer deluded or real,
and not much of a mountain biker considering I've been doing it for over 20 years.

Engineer - BEng Hons - tick. But not at the moment, left RR in 2003.
Downhiller - nil qualifications. Though hanging onto a gravity induced tandem might qualify.
Driving Instructor - tick that aswell.

Downhiller - nope, but I do prefer downhilling to XC simply as I'm better at it!

You could argue that if you own hammers you're more likely to be a technician than an engineer, but that could open a huge can of worms with the technician-wannabe-engineers and the engineers-who-play-with-real-things-not-just-design-them 😉

Everyone who gets their bike fixed in a bike shop is an engineer. At least thats what they all used to tell me to try and win the argument over why through lack of basic maintenance, their 9 month old bike is now fuct.

i always thought that was a square, for when the technical adjuster was too big or you couldn;t be arsed going to the toolbox!

I think Juan is also a computational chemist so theres at least 2 of us into MTbing.

Engineer by training but IT by profession.

Q: "Is that glass half full or half empty?"

Engineer's A: "Neither, the glass is twice as big as it needs to be."

DH'er: Went to UK Bike Park and felt skilless and overly burdened with the principles of consequence

Trained as an electronics engineer and then computer engineer but moved to the dark side, management, after about 12 years.

Been a white van man and now a freelance trainer.

Downhiller(?); No, too old and scared.

Cyclist(?); Yes, and more so since I got made redundant earlier in the year and between training sessions.

engineer: I think the mind and feelings of the messed-up teenager is about as far away from cars/bridges/software as you could be, so pretty much no.

However, I know surveyors, designers, distributors, electricians, pe teachers, and several others who mountain bike. Dont think I know any proper engineers.

I have a good selection of tapometers, gentle persuaders, country screwdrivers and fine adjusters in the back of the Land Rover that have dealt with many bits of forestry kit

The process is a bit one way since they took away our oxyacetelene set as it was deemed too dangerous
