i came up behind a carbon Whyte yesterday and boy was is loud, every gear change was an echoey clunk and the free wheel seem to be amplified as if attached to a bass box. So my questions is are all carbon bikes like this ?

No. I've ridden an Ibis Mojo SL for a while and I was amazed at just how quiet it was, even with stones and stuff being pinged at the downtube.
The Whytes really are the exceptionally loud. It's the large diameter swingarm i reckon! Much louder than my carbon Blur. As far as road bikes go, you rarely ever get a peep! The only time I am aware of my carbon Madone is when i run through patches of detritus, but even then it's only slight... I actually had the pleasure of having use of a titanium Litespeed Archon for a while, and it was noticably louder than my Trek! Beautiful bike to ride though...
