Been mulling this over myself as I currently have an 8 speed set up and hardly every use the granny. Wondered if anyone has gone this route and has any stories to tell?

you'll need a chain device at the very least

Been thinking of doing this with my CX bike.

Do you mean a tensioner? Won't the rear derailleur keep the chain taught? Was thinking of a single 34T chainring up front with a rear deraileur/10sp shifter and 10 speed cassette on the rear...

yes i do. on a commuter bike. No mystery to it, it works.

you might need a front mech/chain guide to stop the chain jumping off though
