Been using spds on the winter roadbike for a while no issues under 40miles.

Been tempted for the larger platform of road pedals out there.

I found some Wellgo rc713's and tempted to use them-save some cash over £80 road pedals.

I found I could never escape from the road 6620 Ultegra pedals in the past!

I have done and I use them on my cx bike which doubles as a road bike in the crap weather.

They're fine but I do/did find that I get hotspots on my feet after three hours or so.

SPD-SLs are great on the road though and the cheap ones can be picked up for little cost.

i use carbon soled m300 custom fit shoes on spds and have ridden up to 13 hours on the roadbike - 300kms

i also use SPDs on my mtb and ride it for 24 hours ...

hotspots suggests bad cleat position to me - i used to get it but once i adjusted the cleats it went away !

It's not an issue on mtbs with exactly the same setup so I reckon it's far more reasonable that, since I don't have carbon soles shoes for my spd pedals, it's the pressure from the cleat on the ball of the foot (due to flex in the shoe sole). Road bikes have that much less give between your feet and the ground so you feel it more.

Yes and no issues - but I use carbon soled shoes.

I'm happy though I've not tried larger platforms

I think I have some old shimano carbon shoes for the roadbike somewhere with SL platform-will check if they can take a spd cleat as they might be the triangle pattern.

(Been using MTB shoes on the road bike so I can still walk but think they might be soft for high mileage)

I haven't had hot spots for yrs but I reckon it was bad position too Trail_rat as I have changed my set up and quite comfy.

Will give them a go! thanks for the tips.

I use SPD's on my road bike and have done 65 mile rides without any probs.

I will get round to changing to road pedals this year though as I'm planning on doing 3 or 4 100 milers.

Problem is its not just road pedals, also need road shoes....and for me SIDI's are the only option 8)

Use time atacs on my Pompino, couldn't see the point in having 'proper' roadie shoes and pedals as I need to climb 3 flights of stairs to get to my desk at work and often watch a collegue clacking and sliping about, done 70+ mile rides on it without any bother.

Yup, spds on my roadbike, but using DH boots so warm feet anyway and very stiff sole. Never tried less stiff shoeage.

i do, using these pedals:

haven't had any problems so far and has saved me the cost of a new pair of shoes.

yup, been using bog standard spd's and non-carbon soled shoes on the road bike for years.

ridden for over 9hrs and over 140 miles of country roads without my feet falling off (so far)

I can't really justify the expense of new shoes when the bike isn't raced or anything like that

me too.

In fact, for my new road bike I've bought some of

I like the look of those Gingerflash, do they take an Shimano MTB fitting?
I've always rode with MTB SPD's on my road bike, even raced with them.

I use Shimano PDM647's on my road bike, (hmm and on my Peregrine), with Specalized MTB shoes, (as I like being able to walk around too). Very comfortable, easy set up and no problems at all - and I never use them on the MTB's ...

Maybe not too clear in this shot from last Sunday tho'?

Not really keeping the purity of a road-bike setup I guess, but we crossed that line some time back (either at the point I installed the 12-30 rear cassette or put the Midge bars on).

yep, spds on the road bike no issues with 4hr+ rides. Its seems sensible to me one set of shoes that are very comfy so why not use them for both. spesh comp things. Body geometry works !!? 😆

I use my Shimano spds on the roadie, but cannot get on with them on my MTB they give me sore knees so I stick to flats, don't seem to get any problems with my knees on the roadie, just back & neck suffer.

Have to say that I used to get this problem, then got some pedals and could not belive the difference in confort, and it was like having an extra gear with the power transfer - really - I could not get over how much better they were.

I've just converted to proper road pedals on my roadie, I personally find them much better, more comfortable and more secure. I use Outland Look Keo style, £22 off Merlin.

I do however use normal SPD's on my commuter bike so I can walk around in the shoes without looking like a prat

I use SPDs no problem - have done 8 hour century rides in them with no hotspots either.

I tried Look pedals but never mastered the knack of clipping in quickly and smoothly as I wobbled away from junctions.

started out with road shoes and pedals but have used mtb SPDs on my roadbikes for about 15years now, means I don't have to waddle round like a constipated duck each time I get off the bike. rarely do more than a couple of hours on the road these days but in the past I've done 100mile rides on SPDs and MTB shoes with no issues at all.

I'll keep using my mtb spds for now but July I will up my mileage hopefully invest in a larger platform should I need it.

Pedals are not cheap!

£90?!

Yup another happy spd user on my road bike. No issues at all (think about 80 miles is the longest ride I've done).

Well I do too no problems, but then I barely use it for road ridding, more commuting.
But I use XC mtb shoes so quite stiff

What shoes do you use mrsflash? My girlfriend is about to pick up some spds for road use and is currently looking at shoes. The shimano women's ones we've looked at don't seem to be carbon soled.

I'm using the PDA520's on mine & they're ok for shorter rides, but would prefer something like SPD-SL's or Look Keo's for longer rides, which is what I'll be fitting to mine soon

I've Crank Brothers Candy pedals on my CX bike which I've ridden many a road mile on. Done 65-miles on the road on Eggbeaters without any problems.

A great plus is you don't have to waddle like a penguin into the cafe...

Yep, been using SPDs on my CX/winter bike this year and everythings been ok whilst wearing my Dragon 2SRSs but must admit I would never fit them to my race bike, for that only the proper feel with Look Keos will suffice. I find climbing on a road bike with SPDs can feel a little odd, use to having my foot clamped in position with zero float, even more so when sprinting flat out etc.

IIRC I think you can get different cleat for spd's to have zero float (can someone actually confirms that)

Use them on my cx bike which doubles as a road bike in bad weather/winter, Ultegra road pedals on summer bike

I'm using touring SPDs Shimano A520 pedals.

I used normal mtb SPDs to begin with but my foot rocked on them too much and I had hot spots. The touring ones look like road pedals and if the platform matched your shoes well (I use Shimano carbon soled mtb racing shoes)they offer great support.
The advantage over road pedals and shoes is that if you like lot's a cake stops (which I know you do) you can still walk easily 🙂

Having said that I got some road shoes and pedals in a deal and are going to give them ago.

always have used spd's...

saved me the cost of some road pedals, and the cost of new shoes.

double winner.

I also use my MTB spds on some M520s on the road bike, and while they work well, I can’t help thinking my commute would be more efficient and more comfortable on an SPD-SL setup, but I have a friend who uses the single sided A520’s (touring pedal) with Carbon Specialized MTB shoes, swears by the setup, and obviously like me can use one shoe for all his on & off road bikes.

I guess it’s just comes down to making the decision to lay out £100+ on new pedals/shoes for my Road bike when it’s not my main bike… some Raod shoes have fitting positions for both SPD and SPD-SL but so far as I can see they are normally the cheaper models, I assume their soles will be as flexible as an equivalent MTB shoe, in which case they have no advantage over my current setup and I should go SPD-SL, or is that simply not the case?

Road pedals + shoes ain’t cheap, unfortunately I am…
