I've just bought a Garmin Forerunner 405. Used it on a road ride yesterday and seemed to be pretty good....although it did show that I'd burnt 5500 calories as I had it set on RUNNING....not CYCLING
Anyhow, wore it spinning this morning and didn't realise that it doesn't calculate calorie in doors. It uses the SPEED from the GPS to calculate calroies burnt.
Question: Has anybody used it in the woods? I.E What is the satelite reception like? I previously had an Edge 305 and this was particularly good.
Any experiences with the forerunner?
Thanks
No but I've used the Forerunner 305 on the bike (you can buy a useful bike mount for it, not sure if you can get one for the 405?). I've found it really good and had no problems with reception. I only use it as a bike computer or to record routes though, I haven't tried navigating with it. As the 405 is meant to have better reception than the 305 it should be good.
I also have a 305 and have had no probs using it outdoors in woods. Can take a while to locate the sats but once acquired never dropped.
I think the 405 speeds up locating the sats and should be just as good. I considered one but the 305 was such a bargain.
enjoy
Yes! I love it for running, and for recording routes. Obviously it's not so good at actually directing you, but hey ho.
I haven't had any major problems in the woods when using it; to be honest the biggest issue I have comes in the city, where the tall buildings make it hard to get a wide angle on the sky. I've heard it doesn't have quite as good GPS as the 205 and 305 (I think because it's a little smaller with slightly smaller capacity battery), but haven't had any major issues.
