Anyone tried a 135mm / 9mm conversion Generic Adapter?

[#12771933]

I need to convert some Hunt wheels from 142 / 12mm to 9mm QR and I wondered if anyone tried one of these:

Example adapter

eBay

If it works it would be very convenient to swap the wheels between bikes rather than removing cassette, freehub etc

Thanks for any comments!

How does it work for the rear?

So far as I understand it:

Front is easy as a 15mm ta hub is the same OLND of 100mm and the qr sticky outy bits are 3.5mm either side over and above.

A 142mm hub doesn't have the same OLDN as a 135mm qr one. Rather the 135 qr is 135mm OLND, 2*3.5mm sticky outy bits, the 142mm is 142mm OLDN and no sticky outy bits. So the ends of the hub would be much to big (12mm + material thickness vs 9mm) to fit the frame.

It would work for an old fashioned 135x12 ta hub mind...

All that being said. I've used one on the front before and it works fine.

Used one of those on my son's rear wheel for a while, when he upgraded his wheels and had a QR frame. Worked fine. I now use it to QR wheels onto my truing stand.
But yep, that was 135mm

BTW, your ebay linked one will ship from China in case you didn't notice, so might take a month or 2 to arrive. They are available from UK sellers 🙂

On hunt wheels is it not just a case of changing the end caps on the hub.. fairly sure it is.

Thanks for comments. For £8 I might just give it a go. thanks for the tip, I will have a search for a UK seller. I checked with the human chat bot on the Hunt website and they confirmed the cassette, rotor etc has to come off.

@Serious I already did and they confirmed you have to remove the cassette and freehub to chance the cassette (as per previous post), but thanks all the same for commenting.

@slowboydickie But if you're planning to just slip that in and ride off then you're going to be disappointed. It won't work for reasons already explained above. The axle length will be 7mm too long so either the adaptor will come up short or the axle will be too long for the frame unless its a Surly with Gnotboost.

I think you're wrong squirrel. I think it'll be both 😉.

The adapter ends will sit flush with the ends of the 142 hub so come up short.
The hub axle will also be too long for the frame.

That generic adaptor isn't going to work for the rear as stated - the OLD of you 142 adaptors is 142mm, there's no way it's going in a 135mm frame.

You need the 10 quid adaptors as listed on the hunt website above. I'm not sure you need to take the cassette off - the spanner flats on the end of the adaptors may well be exposed beyond the cassette. you just need two cone spanners the right size (thin spanners) to get on the flats on the axle adaptor.

FWIW, even if you "do" it'll almost undoubtedly only be the lock ring not the cassette.
That said it's now a 5-10 minute job as opposed to a 45-50 second one.

On the Hunt wheels the centrelock rotor also needs to come off to change the end caps if it’s the same hub as the mk1 4Seasons wheelset fyi - just converted both mine from qr to bolt through and the flange of the non drive side end caps is captive behind the rotor.
