As per the thread title. I'm pondering one on the front of my FlareMAX - 140/125mm, Peak District - which is currently running a Forekaster / Rock Razor combo, which I really like for a balance of grip and speed, but I have the occasional heart in pants moment when I'd just like a little more outright grip up front, usually when things get unexpectedly wet and a little softer.
I don't want the drag and overkill of an Assegai and there's no 2.4 Minion DHF variant, but on paper, the latest Dissector looks like it might be right on the button. I tried the old version and hated the lurchy transition thanks to the gap before the side knobs bit, but the new Gen 2 one looks to have sorted that. I am somewhat wedded to a Maxxis front, I just like their rubber compounds, and if there were a 2.4 DHF, I'd probably run that. I have tried a DHRII as well and I suppose that could also work
Anyway, any thoughts/experience welcome.
I run a rear Dissector at present.
It seems to work well in dry, trailcentre type trails.
Damp, rocks or mud - it seems pretty poor really. Pedalling uphill it seems to struggle for traction. Corners it has stepped out more than a few times when folk ahead or behind are cruising along....
It will be replaced very shortly, and I do not really replace tyres unless they are worn out.
Thanks. That's the latest one, right?
I believe so, however I inherited from youngest_oab who bought it in NZ while over there and took it off first ride back in the UK...
Interesting, it gets pretty good reviews. Hmmm...
I run a Minion DHR II MaxxGrip EXO 2.4 on the front of my FlareMAX. I've taken it to the Peak District a couple of times and also North Wales, as well as riding my local Surrey/Hampshire stuff and never wanted anything different.
I ran the old model up front with a Rock Razor rear over last spring, summer and winter on my hardtail. I changed it a few months ago to double Rock Razors as my HT has become a gravel bike for the time being.
A while ago I went back for a month to the original Dissector rear and Assagai front and it was horrible to ride, so draggy.
I haven't tried the new one personally, but I've only ever seen the Dissector on the back and unless the new one is radically different from the old one, I can see why. It used to be my go to for bike park laps in the summer, more because it's familiar than necessarily the best.
New one is a totally different tyre, ace on the front, and there’s a 2.4 MaxxGrip version.
Yes - so I see now I've googled it a bit... 🙂 Looks like quite the improvement - but still not convinced it'd be my front tyre.
