Anyone recommend a decent\cheapish helmet light?

BTW I’ve got an L&M HID on the bars, so looking for something to complement it.

This might be useful:

or I added some pics the other day of a new torch I got for her indoors that could easily be mounted on a helmet with some old inner tube & some zip ties. Here:

I did a search but most of the threads are shite.

I was hoping people that actually do night rides might post something useful.

Cheers Stumpy for the info, I hadn’t seen that thread.

What's your budget? And do you want a 'proper bike light' or would be happy with a 'torch stuck on the head' offering?

If you want a proper bike light, I'd be looking at Enduro Joystick, Ay Up road kit (which comes with 1 double LED unit, rather than the 2 double units of the mtb kit) or perhaps the Niterider Minewt USB. There's also the Hope vision 1, but that has never looked like a great solution to me. The Ay Up you'd have to get from Oz.

The alternative is a torch lashed on with some (preferably) removable zip ties. I used a couple of Tesco torches last winter, and fortunately the angles of the vents on my helmet meant it was easy to focus them into a point. They are OK, but fairly focussed. I wanted them mainly to get a feel for whether it was something I'd perhaps spend more money on. I used one at the 24/12 and it was a help.
But.....the slightly more expensive torches do now seem to be really performing well. I was put off by the deal extreme ones and their requirement for specific batteries. I have enough chargers lying around the house without having to buy into another charging system. Someone on the other thread I linked to mentioned a deal extreme one that uses AA batteries, but I have not yet looked into that.
The LED lenser one that I bought her indoors really does seem great quality & the beam pattern at a mid-focus position would probably be ideal to complement a bar mounted light.
These places have tons more torches - the Mellert ones look quite good, as does the tactical jack:

Fenix L2D on a Twofish Lockblock:

Combined with a DX P7 on one of their cheapo bar mounts this it the most flexible and powerful set of lights I've owned. Oh ... and it's the cheapest.

Cheers for the info, can't be arsed with zip ties etc, so currently looking at the Joystick MaXx 2, as that appears to have the best helmet mount.

Trying to find out if there’s any improvement for the 2010 model.

Once you have it sorted it's sorted. 2 velcros ... to an extent it depends on the helmet, but works ace with my Veleno. While the Joystick mount is great, I couldn't justify spending £130 when I can get very similar performance for £40. I don't notice it's minimal weight at all on my head and it's so much better than my Lumis were, without cables to catch in branches, getting pulled out at awkward moments!

Same goes for the Deal Extreme P7. Sure it's a torch, but the advantage of having no cables is liberating.

i use the hope 1 - everyone disses it but i think it's great although i've nothing to compare it to. my night riding mate goes riding in the dark up dalby with ONLY a hope vision 1 (i have the vision 2 strapped to my bars as well)

i emailed Exposure about the new model vs current. The response was that it has a different o-ring and the battery is from a new supplier, but that the performance was basically the same.

Best price i found for the joystick was rutland cycling, and they had just had a new delivery in from exposure so should be new models too!

Does that lockblock thing work with any torch? It's not Fenix specific is it? So long as the barrel diameter is in the same ball park??

I have an 09 Joystick and also the Ayups. Comparing them, the Ayups are much better, with a brighter and wider spread beam. I have a 2 lamp (as per road setup mentioned earlier) and a 3 hr battery, which I actually attach to my camelbak strap, rather than on my helmet. The Joystick is lightweight when on the lid, but the Ayup is completely un-noticeable on the weight front when in this setup. Cost wise, the Ayups cost me around £100 direct from Oz (albeit in 07) and the Joystick is now around £150. The big beauty of the Joystick is at this time of year, when you can carry it in your pack or pocket and when it gets dark part way through a ride, simply slap it onto the helmet mount, which is simplicity itself. Come 'winter proper', I'll have the Ayups on my lid for the whiole ride. (and a Hope4 on the bars)

Surely can't go wrong with a Cateye Double Shot Pro for GBP78.00? See ebay item '270428811398' just got one myself from the states...

Stumpy01 ... as long as the torch has a waist the lockblock should work.

Swapping the velcro strap for 2 well spaced zip-ties for the torch side of the lockblock adds considerably more stability.

Personally I find the Fenix L2D a great mid-priced helmet light to compliment a barlight. Over 2hrs on decent recharchables, good beam pattern and considerably smaller than a P7 torch.

I use a modified BLT helmet mount for mine though because a) it was about £3, b) it offers more adjustment and c) it is more solid.
