In the last 2-3 years I've had three UST tyres explode while bike was stationary, stood still in the sunshine.
All Schwalbe tyres, Nobby Nic or Fat Albert, on Crossmax XL or ST with JRA wheel milk inside, at 30 psi.
Two happened at home lucky enough but the latest happened while having a rest on the Garburn Pass route in the lakes this weekend - installed a tube & got back OK.
All sudden explosions have resulted in the bead stretching making the tyre useless for re-use as tubeless.
Anybody had similar experience?
Why is it happening?
I had a Panracer Rampage explode off the rim whist pootling pretty sedately down a road. I guessed that it just wasn't tubeless compatible with my rim (Flow) so I don't use it and use some tubeless specific tyres now which I have had no problem with.
Scwalbe tyres are meant to be good tubeless so that seems very strange.
dickie
I ride with lots of people who run tubeless...UST, kits & ghetto. To bets of my knowledge none of 'em have had this happen.
Intriguing. The sun is gonna make the air in the tyre expand but can't see the pressure increasing that much and you said they were tubeless (UST) tyres. Not got anything strange in there that may be reacting with rubber solution to form a gas?? (God knows what though.)
Try a different sealant? Give Jon at JRA a bell and see if he's heard of this happening??
I've had one non ust big bettie blow off the rim a few times now. Once in the car when in the sun. The need looks a little damaged which would explain it.
i had a continental non ust tyre and left it round my mates in the sun one time, his mum thought a gun had gone off when it exploded, it ripped a 5 inch gash along the bead and needless to say the tyre was a right-off, no idea how it happened...
Tubeless for 2 years now and no issues. I can't see that the sun getting the air pressure up enough from 30psi to enable the tyre to blow. Is it possible that may be happening is the rim is getting warm enough to soften the rubber so that it slides a bit and then the pressure helps it along until it blows.
I have seen a tube escape from inside and under the bead before. I can only assume that it was partly burped off during the ride and then just finished itself off when left. That could also be a possibility here I guess.
Before I even opened this thread I knew it was going to be a Schwalbe tyre. Their UST tyres are awful and they have a real problem with snapping the bead and blowing off rims. They should have recalled them but are continuing to hide the issue. I used to work in a wheel and tubeless specialist who sent their entire stock of Schwalbe UST tyres back as they had so many issues with them.
Speak to the shop you got the tyres from as they should be able to warranty them but you'll probably have the same issue with the replacements unfortunately.

yep
Thanks for the feedback.
I've emailed Schwalbe.
My racing Ralph blew off the rim while sat in my kitchen. I mailed schwalbe but never heard back.
I've had non UST RR's roll off my rims (2.4s on Olympics, I guess I was asking for it ๐ณ )
I generally use Bonty TLR tyres, never had this issue. Never had ANY issue come to think of it.
Yes, Schwalbe Nobby Nic, about 30mins after initial inflation, 30-35psi. Also wrecked the bead.
Perhaps is the bead failing and then the tyres bursting off the rims?...
I over inflated one once that blew off the rim, made a mess with tyre milk everywhere but that was all.
UPDATE:
Schwalbe confirmed they had a faulty batch in early 2009.
I produced an invoice for 2 of the 3 tyres & they sent me 3 brand new UST tyres.
Thks for that dickie - had a NN explode sitting in my house overnight that's around that vintage - tyre was useless after that. Might hunt around for the receipt.
I'm on the rubber queen bandwagon nowadays, but did use NN USTs exclusively for years and never had a problem on the trail.
Nope, but have had road tyres explode twice,
Once the valve detatched itself from the tube anf hit the hub with enough force to chip it.
Second time the tube just burst (about 1cm split), made a noise like a gun going off (not helped by being on a train!)
