I have a set of HX1501 wheels bought new which I believe are OEM. They use what I believe is the 240 Hybrid hub. They came with a steel XD freehub.
Before first use I fitted a EXP microspline freehub. Its not a steel one. The wheels worked great for the 250km I ran them, before they went into storage.
I've dug them out again with the intention of using and one thing has become apparent- is there is no shim/spring seat washer inside, which appears on the DT Swiss photos etc. The spacer (anodised blue) is there. I have found the part online but I'm pretty sure it has never been there.
The two shims (one red, one blue) have the same dimensions. Are they the same bar the colour or different as the description states?

There is also a suggestion that the wheels run EXP OS, and require specific freehubs. However the DT Swiss spare parts for the hub seem to suggest this https://www.sjscycles.co.uk/hub-spares/dt-swiss-hybrid-ratchet-exp-steel-freehub-kit-for-shimano-micro-spline-12mm/ is the right freehub. Which is standard EXP as far as I can see!
The wheels weren't cheap so keen to sort the spacer and replace the microspline freehub if it is the wrong fit.
Thanks in advance for any assistance
I bought those same wheels but can't answer question on the seat without stripping them.
However, I can add further confusion... the only Microspline freewheel I had to hand was a non-EXP steel one so I compared the dimensions with the XD internals and they were identical. That was 16 months ago and the non-EXP MS freehub has been running fine ever since on the wheelset (and a hard life on the eeb).
MS is non-EXP and the XD came off the 240EXP OS hub...

That does indeed not help matters 🤣
I did however find the spring shim/seat/washer, stuck inside another freehub it seems. So that's progress, no idea if it's different from the red version mind but that's not that important.
Given that the various descriptions of the blue version of different sites suggest it will not fit the normal EXP hub I'd place money on one or other having the incorrect dimensions in the description. OS is oversized axle so you would expect a difference!
FWIW I have a 240 EXP rear with HG freehub on it that I'm fairly certain is a non EXP one (no EXP markings). Searching around before I used it found reference to the freehub being the same.
Contact the UK DT support (with the ID number on the hub). They are normally quick to respond and will know for sure.
Is there a UK DT support other than Madison, as that's where the DT Swiss site directed me? No problem if they are clued up with the products just checking..
If the axle is oversized as the name suggests it doesn't seem to be externally, as the standard EXP freehub fits it. And it has to be 12mm internal so..
The axle appears to be oversized within the body only which makes sense. So I suspect the freehub is standard EXP with the Hybrid ones being steel as stock.

Yeap the reply I got came from Dean Scott, DT Swiss Service Manager @ Madison. That particular query was about hub dimensions for a hub from a oem wheelset and the answer was spot on.
Perfect, thanks. Will see what they say!
I have a set of those myself (still boxed and unused, waiting for a frame-only eeb that may never come).
I looked into this when I bought them last year because at the time the steel/hybrid Microspline freehubs weren’t available as a spare. I ended up certain that the steel or alloy freehubs are interchangeable, and what’s different is the ratchet mechanism and spring/washer/spacer assembly.
So as vmgscot found, you can swap to a non-hybrid free hub provided you keep the EXP OS ratchet stuff in place.
Please let us know what Dean Scott says to confirm. I’ve spoken to him a couple of times and he’s a top chap, but for some reason I didn’t check this question with him.
What do you all think of the wheels by the way?
@benos - they have been on my Rise H eeb for 16 months of hard (Scottish) use and not had to touch them. Maybe the alloy nips will need replacing eventually but I also have an 8 year old set of 240/ex471 wheels on my full-susser that have only just needed some of the nips replaced - and still rolling on the original bearings.
