Has anybody had any success respraying their own frame? I'm thinking paint in a can from local car shop plus laquer or just go stealth matt black no laquer and it will be easy to touch up marks..

Its an Inbred Summer, do i need to remove the laquer first?

You really need to rub the whole things down to metal so you can put primer on it so the paint sticks properly. Just spraying over it with an aerosol will look pants IMO.

I did for my crappy old town bike. Nitromors followed by aerosol direct-to-metal paint.

However it's not really stood up to use too well - it scratches really easily, and the top tube is covered in marks from locking it up. Fine for a bodge to freshen up a cheap old frame, probably not too durable for an off-road bike.

It cxan be done - the more work you put in the better the result will be. However by the time you have bought paint / primer sanpaper etc you might well be better off getting it powdercoated.

I see no point in totally stripping it

Easy to get good looking results, impossible to get durability.

Triple S in Bingley are meant to be good if you decide to powdercoat or if you want it painting Bob Jackson Cycles in Bramley have a good rep.

I've got a bare aluminium frame that I want to get painted.

Can you powdercoat an aluminium frame and what would be the best way to prepare the frame?

pics of my Zaskar respray here:

Despite adding plenty coats of lacquer after that, it still chips quite easily and probably cost me more than getting it powdercoated.
