Hey all, I bought a crankset from the classifieds section about a month ago, to begin with they took 2 weeks to arrive, then they didn't come with the bottom bracket as advertised and they were 170mm instead of the 175mm as advertised. So now i'm stuck with some cranks with no bb and too short, i've emailed the seller about 5 times asking for a refund but i've had no reply, I paid through paypal gift so am i buggered or is there another way to get my money back? ta

Alternatively, bombers.

Can't get a refund for a gift payment. Sell on again? Shoddy service though 😕

Ebay them on. It's a lot of aggro to get the cash back (you've effectively opted out of any paypal protection), Small claims etc. is a pain in the neck.

I suspect you'll get most of your money back if you go the Ebay route - it's not as if they're in majorly worse condition is it?

Personally, I can't be doing with the classifieds anymore. Seem to be plenty of chancers about.

i'm trying to give the guy the benefit of the doubt as he had a valid reason why it took ages to post, but im losing patience on the lack of replies to my email, i'm not keen on selling it on as its an odd length and no bb doesn't help but i guess its my only option. il know now not to pay gift but i've never had any trouble in the past

+1

OP - if the ad clearly included the BB and the cranks are short (and you really need 175) then I'd name and shame. If he isnt replying then hes given up his right to a fair hearing.

Its such a shame that the Classified seems to be getting so many knobs on it now. It was always a great place to trade your bits and pieces - not so now.

As above name and shame please !

I've asked for (and received) refunds in 2 out of 3 dodgy fork purchases. In the 3rd fork purchase the seller gave me £50 off to 'keep quiet'. His argument was that even though it was a wet and very dark/windy night when I took the forks from him it was 'buyer beware'. As soon as I got them out of the car at the other end I thought 'I've been ****ed'.

Name and shame. It is the only way.

STW really should have a classified sub-section for transaction ratings, good as well as bad. Obviously it would [s]beed[/s] need safeguards built in so it was not abused...

Watch out for them in future. Ideally try & goad them into buying something they show intrest in.
Then take payment & send them the cranks. 🙂

TBH it could be as simple as people posting on the old FS thread saying "I bought this, it arrived and was OK". The problem is that it needs to become the norm to be of any value - either mentioned STW classifieds rules or through a formal feedback system.

I would imagine it would be a huge undertaking to moderate the classifieds and I'm sure the chaps at STW have better ways to spend their time.

I think it's up to the buyer to wary and check out the sellers previous posts etc.

I am genuinely amazed that people buy 'popular items' from sellers with little posting history so readily on here. Madness.

Crooks do have some intelligence. Not all of them write like 'for sale breaks and suspansion fork'.

I am in a similar situation just now.

Bought a bashguard with bolts, two of the four bolts are stripped, not all the way, they tighten up without bashguard, but with bashguard on they can't bite.

A new set it 6.99, what I paid of the bashguard in the first place.

Contacted seller on Friday, will give him until Monday to respond.

Quite happy with 3.50 paid towards the bolts, but the full 7 quid, I could have bought a new one for that.

A lot of us have been on here a very long time and value the classifieds as a useful service. I don't buy a lot off STW, but have done in the past. I tend to sell my unwanted bits n pieces and as far as I'm aware never had a complaint, but if someones unhappy in any way, it's refund time, no questions asked. I'd rather loose the battle but retain my good name.
I use Retrobike as much these days and it's dead good. The feedback system there works well - how hard/expensive would it be to do something similar here?

they needed servicing

Thats what gets my Goat. If you say something really is due or needs a service you know you wont get the best price but you are being honest.

On ALL three of my fork purchases I asked the question 'how much use have these had'.

The answers back funnily all said 'little use/have too many bikes so not ridden on them more than a handful of times'.

Received and hey presto they all desperately needed a service and new parts- the last ones (for instance) were half full of water and grit.

on arriving forks were leaking fluid

Were they RS forks? Not judging right or wrong but if they are RS forks, it's not unusual particularly if were upside down in transit. Had some Rebas arrive with fluid around the top of the moco but, from previous experience of RS forks, can't say it was a big surprise.

so does naming and shaming actually work or does it just serve to give ( a tiny bit of) consolation to the victim?

For that money use the small claims court.

Name and shame, then let the internet sleuths here track down all their details.

Worked on Friday night for one member who had bought forks - we had the guys place of work, mother etc all tracked down and in sight. Pitchforks were sharpened, torches lit, then he came online and said he would sort it out.

Never heard anymore about it so presume ok.

Better than reading the current specs for BTEC horticulture and horse care.

He's a bit harder to find info on, going to have to dig harder.

Sunday night pitch forks people - get them out.

never thought to look on facebook, think i'll send him a message, not keen on the naming and shaming as I don't want it to hamper me getting any money back, its definitely put me off using classifieds tho, which is a shame as most people on there are no hassle at all
