My brother has just passed the first few stages of officer entry to the Navy, he's an engineering graduate.

Any advice on what to expect in the final interview process and onwards into his career (assuming he gets in).

He hates the idea of being stuck behind a desk like a lot of engineers and originally tried for the RAF but hey aren't recruiting engineers at the moment. What sort of roles should he be aiming for (2-1 in engineering with graphic design), he love the outdoors, not sure he's ever been on a boat though ๐Ÿ˜‰

sizing advice on bell bottom trousers and how to look camp with a mop also appreciated.

Mike

Has he done a selection board yet? Been a while (20-years) but in my day you went down to Plymouth for a couple of days to do various interviews, exams and leadership exercises.

Found this online "You would have to pass a series of selection tests held at the Admiralty Interview Board at HMS Sultan, Gosport. These last two days and include aptitude tests, practical initiative tests, gym tests and interviews" which sounds similar to when I did it.

The exams I found quite easy but the practical/leadership exercises were a bit tougher, especially as I was still a teenager at the time and hadn't done anything similar. Quite a few people struggled really badly with them. There were also various interviews, including ones about politics, beliefs and lifestyle (even what type of music you liked and why). There were perhaps 20 folks sitting the board when I did it, of which only 2 passed (one of them being me!). I was quite surprised at it being that few, but a lot of them were straight of out school (I was already at uni) and quite immature.

Can't really comment on the situation once in, as I decided to join the RNR for a while first to see if I liked it (which I did, but not enough to go full-time). I enjoyed a lot of the time, but there was a fair bit of bullshit and boredom when at sea. I suspect an engineering officers life would be very different from mine (trained as a watch-keeper but specialism of intelligence) though and perhaps would have less bullshit involved.
