I was swapping over the wheels on my voodoo bizango when I noticed the racing Ralph I had been using had started cracking badly on the sidewalls.
So that brings me onto my question. The bike gets used for local xc stuff, nothing to gnar. Im just after somthing wing half decent grip, doesn't weight half a ton, doesn't tear sidewalls easy and tubeless, 29er and no bigger that 2.3. I can't warrant spending £40 a tyre on this bike for what I use it for so looking for somthing on the lower end of the price scale. I noticed onone smorgasbord in the quick search I've done
The Smogasbord is ok in the summer and quite quick rolling, but very quickly becomes clogged in the slightest bit of mud. Definitely a rear tyre.
Specialized have currently got a lot of reduced (50% off in some cases) tyres - maybe pick up a purgatory for the rear wheel for £18.50?

Still a bit more summary than mud plugger. I think the next tyre up in terms of grip would be the eliminator but this will roll a fair bit slower.
For front tyres the butcher would be a chunk grippier than a rocket ron if that’s what you’ve got up front too -
also £18.50 at the moment:
